Emissions From Food Waste

Food waste can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions in a number of ways. When food waste is sent to landfills, it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is much more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of its ability to trap heat in the atmosphere. In fact, methane has a global warming potential that is 28 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year timescale.

Food waste also contributes to emissions when it is produced and transported. The energy used to produce and transport food, as well as the emissions from the vehicles and machinery used in the process, can all add up to a significant carbon footprint.

Reducing food waste can therefore be an important way to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This can involve strategies such as improving food storage and preservation, reducing over-purchasing and over-preparation of food, and donating excess food to food banks or other organizations that can put it to use. Additionally, composting food waste can help to reduce the amount of methane produced in landfills by diverting organic matter away from the landfill and into a more controlled environment where it can decompose without emitting methane.
