Emerging from Isolation

Recently I’ve been speaking to groups of Sandwiched Women (and others) about how change management can help you and your elderly parents as we emerge from isolation.
Here are three tips from what I’ve been sharing:
1. Break the ice!
Over the last year, new, isolating habits have kept you and your elderly parents safe. Now it’s time to break those practices and look forward. The first step is to create awareness that Change Is Coming.
2. Be Kind to Yourself and Your Folks while you’re surrounded by change.
Remember how rough it was last year when everything was changing all the time? Even positive change creates stress. Be gentle with yourself and those around you while we adapt to the new world.
3. Look for freezing mechanisms to help solidify new habits.
While new behaviors are being established, use checklists and celebrate small successes to encourage further emergence.
And throughout it all...
Remember: sometimes all a someone needs is a good listening to. It's okay if you don't have a solution for them - helping them feel heard is part of the solution.
