The Emergence of Uniclass 2015
Since we set up SpecStudio to embrace and encourage modern methods of specifying, we have been fortunate to have supported a number of Architects that have used Uniclass 2015 as their specification classification for their projects.
Having delivered and currently working on numerous projects, totalling nearly £1bn in construction value using Uniclass 2015, we believe we are leading the way in how to specify using this new classification system.
Those familiar with preparing and using traditional specifications in the UK construction industry will recognise references such as NBS, F10, H11, L20, M40, etc. The?Common Arrangement of Work Sections?(CAWS)?has been the industry norm for the classification of specifications for nearly 40 years.
However, with the recent launch of NBS’s cloud-based Chorus system, at SpecStudio we have seen a rise in the adoption of the Uniclass 2015. You can read more about Uniclass 2015 here.
To discover how Uniclass is being put into practice you can read about it here.
It is a classification system designed for structuring digital construction information throughout the life cycle of a project, and can be a BIM requirement as set out in the BS EN ISO 19650?series of standards. The classification is a ‘system’ based approach compared to the traditional ‘trade-based’ grouping. The availability of this classification system via NBS Chorus and the drive for BIM compliance has been a contributor to this uptake by design practices.
With our experience, we are well placed to provide advice and support to design teams who are considering moving across from CAWS, or who are already using Uniclass for their in-house delivery of specifications. At SpecStudio we have been working alongside architectural practices to:
·??????help with their understanding of Uniclass 2015;
·??????provide support to teams;
·??????deliver robust and accurate specifications that can be used by all involved on a project.

Our role as specification consultants is not to have a preference for any specific classification system. It is to ensure that whatever classification has been chosen, the outcome (i.e. specification deliverable) is appropriate for the project, and can be used and relied upon by all parties involved.
As with any change, the unknown and uncertain nature of a new system can create barriers that need to be tested and broken. Our expert consultants have been working behind the scenes to really understand how Uniclass 2015 works and how it can be successfully embraced on projects.
By combing our years of real world experience in preparing specifications, alongside the use of NBS Chorus software, we have been able to develop solutions and write Uniclass specifications on signature projects such as Newcastle Gateshead Quays for HOK. Our unique processes and knowledge help to ensure our clients can structure and deliver specifications that protect their design whilst being accepted by Contactors and the BIM environment.

“SpecStudio have been a great addition to our team through the Stage 3 package and delivery for tender.?Craig and Matt were pleasant and professional to work with, extremely competent, efficient and helpful wherever they could be.?We would happily recommend them for other projects, and we are looking forward to working with them on future phases and projects.”???????????

Our goal is to help ensure that there are no barriers to change, and the migration from traditional methods to more modern and digital outputs can be assisted without compromise in content, quality or understanding.

2 年Super article guys. And great to see the Newcastle Gateshead Quays project being used as the example - right on the doorsteps of NBS HQ in the North East ;) Would be a great one to do a feature on together!
