The emergence of the data centre microgrid
Dear?Subscriber,?
Data Centres are starting to be aware of the benefits provided by microgrids. A microgrid is a localized and self-contained energy network that connects with the utility grid. They differ from conventional power grids because all the grid assets from generation are located close to each other. These microgrids can draw power from the utility grid when it is advantageous, but they are also designed to operate in island mode without grid support. This islanding mode is typical for many data centre operations.
Though often seen as security for when the power fails, microgrids are far more than that for data centre operators. Ultimately, a microgrid increases a data centre operator’s confidence in uptime, ensuring tenants’ needs for computing continuity are met.

Could end-to-end energy management transform data centres into sustainable consumers??
Hitachi Energy has been outlining what they call a microgrid approach to energy management. The methodology they take is to focus on every component of a data centre that uses power to understand how this level of oversight can deliver the insights needed to improve energy efficiency. As the energy debate surrounding data centres continues unabated, is a new approach needed that enables data centres to take a more focused approach to energy management?
