Embracing Your Authentic Self: Just be You

In a world dominated by influencers with massive followings, it's easy to fall into the trap of wanting to be someone else. But think about it – have you ever genuinely wished to be like another person? Chances are, the answer is a resounding "No." However, in our quest to fit in, we often find ourselves imitating behaviors that suppress our true selves. This article explores the journey of self-discovery and the importance of embracing your authentic self, even in professional settings.

Reflecting on your career, you might recall moments when your unique personality clashed with the seriousness of those around you. The pressure to conform can suffocate your individuality and hinder your true potential. It's not uncommon to have suppressed your quirks to align with the norm, believing that fitting in would pave the way for success. Unfortunately, this approach often leads to missed opportunities and an inability to deliver at your best.

In the early days as a manager I led teams where my direct reports were all older than me. I often found that while navigating the complexities of leadership, I ended up trying to mimic the behaviors of my older colleagues. Despite the well-intentioned support, I realized that I was actually sacrificing being the true me, surprsessing my individuality in the process. Over time as my confidence grew, I started to realize that my value as a leader was defined by a blend of knowledge, experience, and personality.

Embracing your true self doesn't mean showing up in board shorts and flip-flops, but it does mean acknowledging the power of your personality and unique approach. While certain leadership roles might have specific expectations, the key is finding the right match between your authentic self and the environment you want to work in. The chemistry between you, your role, and your organization is essential.

Entering a new role with your authentic self can be challenging. I would recommend a gradual approach, introducing elements of your personality in manageable doses. Balancing self-expression with team dynamics is crucial; you want to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable. While it's tempting to show your true colors immediately, a more gradual unveiling can help foster collaboration and understanding.

Based on my own experiences I would highlight that embracing one's authentic self is an ongoing process. Even when you believe you've fully embraced this lesson, there might be layers left to uncover, which for many of us is how we like it, get to know me, but only close friends should know the deep meaning of me. Personal growth is a journey, and it's okay to realize that being yourself is an evolving endeavor. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunities I have been given, the leaders I have worked for and with, where I have learned and appreciated the value of authenticity through experience.

Being yourself isn't always easy, but it's essential for personal fulfillment and successful collaboration. I would finish with highlighting that its important to "Just be you." Embracing your authentic self takes time and effort, but it's the surest way to contribute your best to your job and relationships. By gradually sharing your true self and finding the right balance, you can create a harmonious space for personal growth, collaboration, and genuine engagement.

Do you find it hard to be the authentic you or are you always yourself at work? Are you looking for some advice or just want to talk to someone who possibly has as many unique experiences in their life as you? Let me know always happy to talk.

Thanks for reading!

Love this - authenticity is where it's at! Your thoughts reminded me of the excellent book No Hard Feelings by Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy which addresses this, too... this piece on emotions is gold.
