Embracing Winter Solstice: A Call to Silence and Inner Reflection

In winter, darkness, like a warm coat, gently closes around me. It beckons me to pause, to turn inward, and to attune myself to the subtle whispers of my spirit.

?

Yes, the holidays are a time of wonder, with all the twinkling lights, festivities, good food, and joyful tidings, but what if, for just one day, you were to drop the busyness and let yourself pause in stillness? What if you listened not to the demands of the world, but to the quiet rhythms of nature and your own soul?

In recent years, I have developed a sacred practice of stopping for the Winter Solstice. This practice reminds me that I am connected to the rhythms of something far greater than myself. It is when I stop and listen with a deep and purposeful stillness that I am able to tap into the greater wisdom that helps guide me on my journey through this life.

On each Winter Solstice, I find a comfortable seat in a space illuminated by a single candle. I fall into quietude. Going in and in and in, I enter my innermost dwelling. I reflect on what has passed in the previous year and cast aside all that no longer serves me. I assess where I am on my one true path, finding the spaces that need healing or a loving touch, and reset the compass to continue my right journey.

This practice has become quite profound, and it has produced moments of deep serenity and clarity. It has also become the one holiday that I most look forward to. This year, on this Winter Solstice, I welcome you to pause with me. Together we can experience the serene essence of this sacred time in deep silence and listen to our inner truths. In this practice, you will learn what in your life no longer serves you. Discover what pieces of yourself are asking for rest, healing, or renewal. You will reset your intentions for the year ahead.

Taking this time on the Winter Solstice in stillness and deep reflection is to fulfill the divine rhythm of nature. As winter folds in and the energies of the year are spent, nature ushers in stillness and brings with it a deep repose. Leaves dry and crumble. Creatures settle in deep slumber. Vitality is dimmed with the waning light. It is time to go inward, to take rest from the activities of the year, and to find healing in the cool darkness. Yet the ways in which we celebrate the season in the western tradition move us against our nature. We shout while nature whispers. We hurry while the earth rests. Demands and expectations of the holiday force us to do more rather than less as we rush about with extensive to-do lists, gather in festive celebrations, and bring in more light and activity that frightens away winter’s dormancy. ??

Resting when the earth rests will cease the constant pull of our fast-paced world on you. Your tattered edges will begin to heal. You will leave behind—if only for a time—the extraordinary demands, year-end-projects, never-ending buzz of notifications, and the ceaseless cacophony of a society in frantic motion—And find at last a blissful peace and renewed purpose of being. You will emerge renewed, refreshed, and ready to enter the celebrations of light that mark the coming of a new calendar year.

Are you ready to begin your Winter Solstice meditations? On the day of the Solstice, turn off all notifications and close out all interruptions. Find a comfortable seat in a softly lit space. If you like soft music, find music that celebrates the winter solstice or simply speaks softly to your spirit. Perhaps prepare a cup of herbal tea and bring yourself into a serene and contemplative state. Keep a journal to record your experiences for further reflection.

Meditation 1. Align with the Rhythm of Nature

Winter’s energy is that of stillness. Nature slows down. Flowers fade. The earth falls into a restful slumber. Healing and rejuvenation happen most profoundly in this stillness, so too can we benefit from aligning ourselves with this natural rhythm. The winter solstice is, at its core, an invitation to synchronize our internal compass with the harmony of the universe. By immersing ourselves in the tranquility of this cosmic choir, we open the door to introspection and self-discovery.

Meditation: Breathe in peace. Breathe away the busyness. Settle into your bones and enter the cave of your innermost being. There, find peace. Hear the truth whisper: "Rest. Let go. For this is a time of healing." Find this peace and ask yourself: “Who am I? Where do I find myself in this moment?”

?

Meditation 2. Follow the Path to Inner Wisdom

Sit with yourself in your inner dwelling, with the only light the flickering glow of your spirit. In this silence, create space to listen to your truth. It is within this sacred silence that the depths of your thoughts, dreams, and aspirations can surface, guiding you towards a more authentic and purposeful path.

Meditation: Breathe in silence. Breathe away expectation. Be silent and listen without judgment. Feel your seat connecting you to the earth and feel your crown connecting you to your higher purpose. Come into the flow in this conduit and ask yourself: “Am I manifesting on this earth what my higher purpose has intended?”

?

Meditation 3. Meet Your Truth with Courage

As you navigate your professional and personal landscapes, the winter solstice encourages us to reflect on the year gone by — our triumphs, challenges, and the lessons learned. This introspective journey not only fosters a deeper understanding of ourselves but also unveils insights that can shape our future endeavors. By courageously meeting your truths and embracing this moment of reflection, you empower yourself to make informed decisions, set meaningful goals, and plan your journey ahead with deep purposefulness and clarity.

Meditation: Breathe in truth and clarity. Breathe away confusion. Ask yourself: “What is working for me? What no longer serves me? What can I do to recommit to my truth and to my higher purpose?”

?

I invite you to spend at least an hour with each meditation. As you explore them, listen deeply. Honor the wisdom that surfaces. Let the reflections of each sacred pause become a guide, gently steering you back to your truest self and path whenever the currents of life pull you astray. Even though this practice occurs on the Winter Solstice, your journey is not bound by this single moment; it is a lifelong rhythm, echoing the cycles of nature, inviting you to return again and again.

Happy Winter Solstice! There was a saying that went in ancient China, "The Winter Solstice is as significant as the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)."
