I recently came across a Chinese proverb that struck a chord with me:

见酒不饮最为高，见色不乱是英豪，见财不贪真君子，有气不发祸事消。

Translation: "It is most noble not to drink when seeing alcohol, heroic not to be disturbed by beauty, truly a gentleman not to covet wealth, and calamities diminish when one does not lose their temper."
