Embracing Video Interviews

Embracing Video Interviews

Having been in lockdown for several weeks now, most of us have become familiar with regular work and social catch ups via Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. That said, video interviews are not something many of us are familiar with, and I am sure many find them a little daunting, but don't worry I have some tips to help with preparation and how to make an impact.

Test out the technology first - it doesn't matter if you are using a laptop, tablet, smartphone or PC, each interview platform will behave differently on every device, so it is key to test it first.

  1. Double check the front-facing camera is working and the picture is clear.
  2. Check the audio is working and whether it is better to wear earphones or not.
  3. Finally, do a test run with either a friend or via the recruitment consultant you are interviewing through.

Location is key. You need to find a quiet location, somewhere you will be free of interruption or background noise. If you are not using your mobile for the interview make sure it is on “do not disturb”.

Lighting - ensure are sitting in a well lit and clutter free place. Natural light it always best, so an area facing (not directly) at a window. If you need the light on make sure it doesn't cause shadows, light in front of you is the most flattering, so perhaps use a desk lamp.

Be prepared - know why you want to work for the company, why the role is of particular interest and your relevant skills and experience. Who are you meeting, have you viewed their profile on LinkedIn and visited their website? Do you know interview style they use - informal, competency etc?

Bring your notes - it is worthwhile having a copy of the role profile and your CV in front of you, with highlights of the areas you are familiar with and your relevant key skills. You can even have a prompt with your key competencies and STAR (ask me if you are not familiar with STAR). You could even stick your notes on the wall behind the screen, so they are easier to read. Have a notepad and pen to write down helpful notes.

Breath - it is natural to be a bit nervous, video interviewing may be new to you, but it really isn't that different to a face-to-face one. Being prepared and sitting in a familiar environment will really help. Have a glass of water to sip and a tissue handy.

What if.....the doorbell rings or your toddler burst in. Don't panic, simply apologise for the interruption and carry on with your point. Believe me, this won't be the first time most of us have had to deal with an unexpected interruption right now.

Dress to impress - you might all be at home on the call, but dress smartly and don’t forget to smile.

Where to look - if possible you should try to have the camera centred to where you are sitting. That way you can focus on the screen, whilst appearing to be looking directly at the person(s) interviewing you.

Just be yourself and try to relax. They already shortlisted you for interview, so take this as an opportunity to showcase why they were right to pick you. The more relaxed you are the easier it will be for your personality to shine.

Good luck with the interview.
