Embracing the Unseen Strengths in a Measurable World

Embracing the Unseen Strengths in a Measurable World

The other night, I was playing PlayStation with some friends. We were immersed in "Overcooked," a game that requires teamwork and collaboration. After we finished the collaborative mode, we decided to switch things up and try the versus mode. To put it bluntly, I lost. Big time.

But it wasn’t the loss itself that stung. It was another realization; no matter what activities we do, I’m not going to be the best. I am the only woman in this group of friends and there I found myself confronted with a broader, more painful truth: I’m not the best driver, I’m not the best at fixing things, and I’m not the best at mini-golf, basketball, pool, or bowling. For someone who has always strived to be the “good girl,” and to succeed, this was difficult to digest.

In a world where measurable achievements often take center stage, it’s easy to overlook the value of qualities that cannot be easily quantified. You can’t measure empathy or willingness to listen to others, yet these are the traits that build strong relationships and foster genuine connections. These are the skills that, while not immediately visible, have a profound impact on our personal and professional lives.

This experience made me reflect on the importance of recognizing and valuing these intangible strengths, both in ourselves and in others. It also ties into a broader concept relevant to the business world: product-led growth.

The Connection to Product-Led Growth

In the realm of business, particularly in the tech industry, product-led growth has become a powerful strategy. PLG emphasizes the product itself as the primary driver of customer acquisition, retention, and expansion. Much like the intangible qualities I’ve been reflecting on, the success of PLG hinges on subtle, often unseen elements that create a compelling user experience.

A product-led approach requires deep empathy for the user. It demands a willingness to listen to feedback and an understanding of user needs that goes beyond surface-level metrics. These are the very qualities that I believe are undervalued in everyday life but are essential for success in a PLG strategy.

In both personal growth and business, we must learn to value what isn’t immediately visible or measurable. The collaborative skills honed through empathy and active listening can lead to stronger team dynamics and better product development. Just as in the game "Overcooked," where teamwork is crucial to success, in business, the unseen elements of collaboration and empathy drive true growth and innovation.

Embracing Our Unique Strengths

As I continue to navigate my own insecurities and strive to embrace my unique strengths, I encourage others to do the same. Let’s recognize that not all skills are measurable by conventional means. Let’s celebrate the qualities that make us uniquely human—our empathy, our ability to listen, and our capacity to connect with others on a deeper level.

Where we often prioritize visible achievements, it’s essential to remember that some of the most impactful qualities are sometimes those that cannot be easily measured.
