In today's global landscape, industries like technology thrive on diversity, drawing talent from various corners of the world. Yet, for many individuals, particularly young African women like myself, entering these spaces can sometimes feel like stepping into uncharted territory. As a minority voice in the tech industry, I've often found myself in rooms where I'm the only one who looks and sounds like me. However, rather than viewing this as a disadvantage, I've come to realise that being unique is a powerful asset that can propel both personal and professional growth.
Statistics on African women's participation in global technology are scarce, but the numbers we do have paint a stark picture. According to the UNDP, in 2022, women made up only 28% of professionals in the tech sector worldwide, with representation in Sub-Saharan Africa standing at just 30%. In my home country of South Africa, the figures were even lower, with only 23% of women holding roles in the ICT sector. Being a minority within this minority might seem daunting, but I have come to realise that it is a strength that sets me apart.
One of the most recurring compliments I've received throughout my career is that my ideas and contributions are "refreshing" and "interesting" precisely because they deviate from the norm. In a global industry that thrives on diversity of thought, being different is a tremendous asset.
One pivotal moment in my career highlights the strength of embracing my uniqueness. While still in the early days of my first tech role, I encountered a senior colleague leading a high-profile project related to my area of expertise. Without hesitation, I offered her some unsolicited but respectful feedback. To my surprise, she not only welcomed my input but also invited me to join her project and contribute my ideas. This experience not only provided me with valuable exposure but also forged a meaningful connection with an influential ally in the workplace.
The belief in the power of my unique voice was instilled in me from a young age, thanks to the unwavering support of my parents. They encouraged me to explore creative outlets such as writing, directing, and performing in stage productions, nurturing my ability to express myself confidently and laying the foundation for my professional journey. Further, throughout my academic and professional journey, I've received accolades from my educators and leaders for my distinct voice and perspective, reinforcing the importance of staying true to myself.
However, I recognise that not everyone has had the same level of support in cultivating their unique voice, especially women who are minorities in their respective industries. I believe that actively nurturing and amplifying one's voice professionally is crucial. That's why I'm passionate about sharing practical tips for fellow young professionals on finding and embracing their voices in the workplace:
Embrace Your Background: Your cultural heritage and life experiences are assets that bring a unique perspective to the table. Don't hesitate to share your insights and experiences, as they can offer fresh viewpoints and solutions.
Speak Up: Don't underestimate the value of your opinions and ideas. Even if they diverge from the majority, speaking up can lead to meaningful contributions and open doors to new opportunities.
Find Allies: Surround yourself with supportive colleagues who champion diversity and inclusion. Building a network of allies can provide the encouragement and support needed to assert yourself confidently in the workplace.
Seek Mentorship: Look for mentors who have navigated similar challenges and can offer guidance and advice. Their wisdom and experience can help you navigate obstacles and unlock your full potential.

In conclusion, as young African women in technology and other seemingly uncharted industries, our unique voices are our greatest assets. By embracing and amplifying our perspectives, we can drive positive change and innovation. I encourage everyone to find their professional voice, confident in the knowledge that diversity is what makes us truly powerful.
