CEO at Atrium Ltd. Passionate and fascinated about the connection between light and health, and how to deliver healthier human outcomes in the built environment with light.
I was really excited to see the addition of ‘Time in Daylight’ as part of iOS17, released earlier this week.? In my opinion this is a fantastic addition to the Health App and a clear indication that natural light is being recognised as a significant and important part of our lives.?
In a world that's increasingly digital, we often find ourselves spending more time indoors, connected to our devices, and reports suggest we spend up to 90% of our time indoors, this evolution is not good for us.? Amidst this digital age, we should never forget the profound impact that natural daylight can have on our health and wellbeing.
The Power or Daylight
Daylight is more than just ambient illumination; it's a vital component of our lives. Exposure to natural light offers numerous benefits, both physical and mental. It helps regulate our circadian rhythms, improves mood, enhances productivity, and even supports our overall health.
With the latest iOS update, Apple Health has embraced the importance of daylight. Now, your iPhone can measure and record the time you spend in natural light. This feature not only encourages us to get outside and soak up the sun but also provides valuable insights into how daylight impacts your daily routine.
Why Daylight Tracking Matters
1.????Healthier Circadian Rhythms: Our bodies rely on natural light to regulate our internal clocks. By monitoring your daylight exposure, you help maintain a healthier sleep-wake cycle, ultimately leading to better sleep quality and overall well-being.
2.????Enhanced Productivity: Studies have shown that exposure to natural light during the day can boost productivity and concentration.?
3.????Mood and Mental Health: Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. Tracking your daylight exposure can help you ensure you're getting the mood-boosting benefits of the sun.
4.????Vitamin D Production: Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and a strong immune system. Keeping tabs on your daylight hours can help you maintain adequate vitamin D levels.
Conclusion
In a world where screens often dominate our attention, it's crucial to remember the profound impact of natural daylight on our lives and the importance of embracing the sun's rays for our health and well-being. So, make a conscious effort to step outside, let the sunlight soak in to help you make the most of your day.
As we move forward in this digital age, we must not forget to embrace the natural world around us, one sunbeam at a time.
