Embracing STEM and fostering a Cambridge community

At Sage College, The British International School of Jerez in Spain, teachers, and learners are taking on enquiry-based teaching and project-based learning to improve STEM education. Last month, over 40 students from three different schools were brought together for a week of creating, sharing, and learning in STEM.

Sage College invited Josef-Schwartz School in Germany and?Dwujezyczna Szkola ?in Poland, which is a Cambridge International School, to take part in the STEM week, where they engaged in various daytime and evening activities, workshops, and cross-curricular projects between science and other subjects.

Francisco Soto says while the science part is important, it is just as important for the students to have human contact, travel, and learn about each other’s cultures and traditions.

“Being a Cambridge International school has allowed us to be in contact with other Cambridge schools around the world. We invited a partner school to our STEM week and it is an opportunity for the students to find out about how science works, spend time together, and exchange their experiences. Seeing the students saying goodbye to each other, almost crying, shows the most important part of the event is the connections they have been able to build.”

Cambridge International’s Senior Manager for Europe, Nick Mazur also attended the final day when students received their Cambridge IGCSE and International A Level certificates. Nick delivered an inspirational speech on choosing the right pathway for the future and says:

“It was a very interesting and proactive event with students engaged in their scientific activities.?I really liked seeing the way the students were all working together – thinking about practical solutions and actively engaging in experimentation. This is very much the Cambridge approach to sciences. It was even better to see a school in Spain hosting students from Germany and Poland.?It is a great example of the Cambridge community of schools in action”
