Embracing Solidarity: Supporting Asylum Seekers in Llanelli

Two weeks ago, our team joined the asylum seekers welcome group alongside Stand Up to Racism and other local organisations, standing in solidarity with the asylum seekers being brought to Stradey Park in Llanelli. What we witnessed was deeply disturbing - over 250 protesters blocking hotel entrances, creating a hostile and tense environment.

The decision to house over 240 asylum seekers in a 78 bedroom hotel has been far from ideal. Accommodations like hotels and barges are inadequate for long-term living conditions, leading to issues of integration and lack of support infrastructure. Amid frustrations with the Home Office's plans, misunderstandings have perpetuated hate against asylum seekers, who are also victims of a flawed system. This division is further marginalising communities.

As a nation of sanctuary, we must question how we welcome people from all parts of the world and make them feel at home here in Wales. We firmly believe that judging who deserves support goes against human rights.

The protests have sparked worries about the welfare of the asylum seekers when they do arrive, with misinformation and far-right activists adding to the tension. It is essential for the community to come together, support asylum seekers, and counter hate with love and increased awareness.

At The CAE, we recognize our responsibility to provide support during this crucial time and stand firm in our commitment to contributing to a Wales that has social justice at its heart. We believe in the Welsh Dream - helping migrants to integrate fully into society and achieve a safer and better life. Our ongoing call to action is to spread love and create a welcoming environment.

Asylum seekers have endured immense hardship and unimaginable trauma. It is our duty as global citizens of the world to extend a helping hand while their asylum claims are processed. Let us rise above hate and promote compassion, solidarity, and support for those seeking refuge.

In the face of division, let us unite as a community, offering understanding, empathy, and practical assistance. Together, we can build a brighter future for all in Llanelli.
