Embracing the Role as the Fulcrum

Navigating the dual realities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is like riding a seesaw. My daily relationship with AI fluctuates dramatically: some days, I am captivated by its potential to enhance learning;?other days, I am troubled by its implications.?Some days, I love AI; others, I don't.
The seesaw swings from "Is AI good for education? Should we embrace it?" to "Is AI bad for education? Should we ban it?" As an educator, I consider all views on AI, both positive and negative, striving to find a balanced understanding.?For example, a recent blog discussed some critical views on AI in education (read it here). While the perspective in this blog provides critical counterpoints that might challenge popular opinions, it offers insights for anyone shaping educational policies and practices.
I shared my ongoing internal debate, and a LinkedIn Connection, Andrew Kaiser , had a profound impact. He commented, "Be the fulcrum... life is usually more incremental than most will admit." This advice not only gave me goosebumps but also resonated deeply with every educator I've shared it with.
The Fulcrum: Stability Amidst Movement
In a seesaw, the fulcrum is the stable point supporting and balancing the motion. This analogy is incredibly relevant to our role as educators, especially now. We must act as the fulcrum—providing a balanced, stable perspective amidst the oscillating views about AI in education.
Being the fulcrum involves recognizing AI's potential to enhance educational experiences while being aware of its pitfalls. It means finding ways to safely use AI for teaching, assisting with tasks, and generating excitement, all while acknowledging the challenges it presents. This balanced approach helps us avoid unquestioningly promoting AI or rejecting its benefits out of fear.

Incremental Changes: The Reality of Progress
Andrew's comment highlights an important truth: real change is incremental. While AI can dramatically shift our teaching methods and educational approaches, integrating it into our practices is an evolution, not a revolution. By being the fulcrum, we guide this technology toward ethical, beneficial outcomes aligned with our educational values.
The AI Seesaw: A Day-to-Day Reality
My stance on AI in education changes frequently. One day, I am excited about AI tools that offer personalized student feedback; the next day, I am wary about data privacy and subtle biases affecting educational content. This is the seesaw in action. As the fulcrum, I strive to maintain balance, adapting daily to the shifts in technology and policy.
I have come to terms with the 'seesaw effect' of AI in education and am embracing my role as the fulcrum. I encourage you to do the same. Being the fulcrum isn't just about stability; it's about enabling movement and progress. We don't simply maintain balance; we support and guide the dynamics of integrating AI to be integrated thoughtfully and ethically. This role requires a deep understanding of AI's potential benefits and pitfalls, coupled with a proactive strategy for using it to enhance education and uphold our values.
I would love to hear from you—how do you see yourself as a fulcrum in the ever-evolving landscape of AI and education?
