Embracing Risk, Storytelling, and Entrepreneurship: Keys to Wildly Successful Personal and Business Growth

We've all heard phrases like "take risks" or "step outside your comfort zone." But what does that truly mean, especially for women entrepreneurs navigating the complexities of leadership, personal growth, and societal expectations? In the latest episode of The Conscious Entrepreneur Show, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Teri Bybee , founder of Women Who Risk, for a deep and insightful conversation about the intersection of business, risk, and empowerment.

Teri has dedicated her career to helping women embrace their strengths and take bold risks, not just in their professional lives but in their personal journeys as well. Her work revolves around dismantling the societal limitations placed on women, especially those related to perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and fear.

In this article, I’ll share some key takeaways from our conversation, explore the role of risk in entrepreneurship, and provide actionable steps you can take to move beyond fear and doubt to achieve greater success and fulfillment.

The Role of Risk in Conscious Entrepreneurship

For many women, risk has been framed as something to avoid, often starting from childhood. As Teri pointed out, boys are often encouraged to explore and take risks, while girls are frequently taught to "be careful" or "stay safe." This social conditioning follows many women into adulthood, where the fear of making mistakes or being judged holds them back from taking the necessary risks to move forward in their careers and personal lives.

In entrepreneurship, however, taking risks is not just encouraged—it's essential. Whether it's launching a new product, pivoting your business model, or simply putting yourself out there in a bigger way, the willingness to take calculated risks often determines whether a business thrives or stagnates.

Teri’s Journey: Navigating Fear and Perfectionism

Teri's story is both inspiring and relatable. Like many of us, she struggled with fear and perfectionism early in her journey. Despite her deep passion for empowering women, she found herself feeling overwhelmed by the very risks she knew she needed to take. In the episode, she shared how stepping out of her comfort zone and starting Women Who Risk became a transformative experience—not just for her, but for the many women she serves.

What makes Teri's story so powerful is her openness about the emotional challenges she faced. She talked about moments of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and how perfectionism almost stopped her from taking action altogether. But she also highlighted how embracing vulnerability allowed her to grow, not just as an entrepreneur, but as a mentor and leader.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Building Confidence

One of the most impactful parts of our conversation was about imposter syndrome—the belief that we’re not good enough, not experienced enough, or somehow unworthy of success. This is something I know many conscious entrepreneurs, particularly women, struggle with.

Teri emphasized that imposter syndrome is a form of self-sabotage, often rooted in the fear of judgment or failure. The key to overcoming it, she said, is recognizing it for what it is: a limiting belief that can be challenged and changed. She encourages women to reframe their thinking, understanding that their experiences and unique perspectives are exactly what make them valuable.

This is where community plays an essential role. As Teri discussed, sharing our stories with others, particularly in safe and supportive environments, can help us build confidence and challenge those limiting beliefs. Whether it's through mentorship, peer support, or simply talking with friends, creating connections with others who understand our struggles is a vital part of growth.

3 Practical Steps to Start Taking Risks Today

  1. Challenge Perfectionism: Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Waiting until everything is "perfect" often leads to missed opportunities. Instead, commit to progress over perfection. Each step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.
  2. Reframe Failure as Feedback: Fear of failure is one of the biggest barriers to risk-taking. Start reframing failure as an opportunity to learn and grow, rather than something to avoid. The lessons you gain from missteps are often the ones that lead to breakthroughs.
  3. Surround Yourself with Support : As we discussed in the episode, having a strong support network is essential when taking risks. Seek out communities, mentors, and peers who understand your journey and can provide encouragement and constructive feedback along the way.

Final Thoughts: The Power of Resilience and Storytelling

At the heart of our conversation was the idea that resilience and storytelling are integral to conscious entrepreneurship. Sharing our stories helps us process our experiences, build connections, and ultimately empower others. And as Teri's journey shows, resilience—fueled by the willingness to take risks—is what allows us to grow, both personally and professionally.

If you find yourself struggling with fear, perfectionism, or doubt, know that you're not alone. Every successful entrepreneur has faced these challenges. The key is to take small, bold steps, share your journey with others, and continually push yourself to grow.

I believe the greatest risk is trying to walk on an eggshell and hoping that it won't break. Playing it safe does hinder us from growth. The quote referring to Jim Rohn goes: "It's all risky. The minute you were born, it got risky. If you think trying is risky, wait till they hand you the bill for not trying. If you think investing is risky, wait till you get the tab for not investing. It’s all risky. Getting married is risky, having children is risky, going into business is risky. It’s all risky. I'll tell you how risky life is: you're not going to get out alive."?
