Embracing the Power of Summer Reading

Summer is a season of warmth, freedom, and adventure for our children. Yet, it can also be a time when they lose their learning momentum. I vividly remember how my parents nurtured my love for reading by investing in my library and consistently reading to me. Their dedication and my boundless imagination laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for stories and knowledge.

Reflecting on my journey, I am unsurprised that I eventually wrote and collected children's books. One of my proudest creations is "Khloe's Beautiful Blues." This book has stretched me as a creator, evolving from a simple story to remind a student of her inherent beauty into a movement addressing colorism, bullying, and microaggressions.

The transformation of "Khloe's Beautiful Blues" into a powerful play commissioned by Bronzeville Arts Ensemble and Black Theater Festival has been remarkable. This play brings the book's affirmations to life, highlighting the profound impact of bullying and the importance of self-love and acceptance.

My love for cartoons further inspired an animation short affirmation produced by the Zizzo Group , a female-owned firm. Collaborating with such a professional and innovative team was mind-blowing. This animation short can reach children and women worldwide, spreading messages of positivity and self-worth.

Recently, a video released during Father's Day poignantly reminded us of the vital role dads play in affirming their children and fostering a love for reading. I was privileged to work with Terrance Sims on this project, and we received incredible support from Girl Dads and uncles like Imad Taylor from FedEx. These fathers understand the power of literacy and the legacy of affirmation and support they can inspire in their children.

To all the dads out there, thank you for being our heroes. Your dedication and love are invaluable in shaping a brighter future for our children. Keep reading, keep affirming, and keep inspiring. Together, we can create a world where every child feels beautifully and wonderfully made, just like Khloe.
