Embracing the Power of Pause

Have you ever felt the weight of burnout creeping in at work?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 4 people will experience burnout during their careers.?

As leaders, our days are often packed with back-to-back meetings, urgent tasks, and constant decision-making. It's not just us—our teams feel the pressure too, and over time, this relentless pace can lead to exhaustion and burnout.

But what if I told you there’s a simple, yet powerful tool that can help combat this? It’s called the Power of Pause.

What is the Power of Pause?

It's?the intentional act of stopping, even for just a few minutes, to reflect, breathe, and reset. It’s more than just a break; it’s a moment to cultivate self-awareness and emotional regulation—critical aspects of emotional intelligence (EQ).

How to Implement It:

  • For Yourself: Start by integrating 5-minute pauses into your day. Use these moments to check in with your emotions, identify stressors, and consciously release tension. This small practice can help you stay grounded, maintain focus, and build resilience.
  • For Your Team: Encourage regular pauses within your team. This could be a daily check-in where everyone shares how they’re feeling or simply promoting a culture that sees short breaks as a strength rather than a weakness. It’s about creating an environment where well-being is prioritized.?

Why It Works:

Taking a pause allows us to reconnect with our emotions, recognize early signs of burnout, and take proactive steps to address them. It’s a small, yet powerful way to foster emotional resilience and create a supportive work environment.

Several years ago, my team and I?practiced?a "mindful minute" before every team meeting -- one minute of silence to pause and recharge before diving into work.

It's amazing how impactful just one minute was in shifting everyone's energy, mood, and focus.

Sonia K. Singh, MHA, PCC ?? I use a two breaks in my day to see if I addressed my “to do list”. Although the list might change during the day, at least I’m addressing issues that we’re important at the beginning of the day
