Redefining Success
From the moment we take our first breath, society starts marking our achievements. The first smile, the first word, that initial step. As we grow, so does the checklist - making friends, being popular, scoring top grades, landing that dream job, finding the "perfect" partner. The list just keeps growing.
The standard markers of success, such as material wealth, job status, relationships, and influence, are often the first we default to, particularly when we lack deep knowledge about someone. But maybe, just maybe there’s a bit more to our accepted and highly coveted ideals of success.
The Trap of Societal Influences
Our understanding of success is shaped by an intricate combination of societal expectations, cultural values, our upbringing, education, and personal dreams. Often, these are so intertwined that we might not even realize where one influence ends and another begins.
Let's stop a moment and ask ourselves, what is the meaning of true success? Is it really amassing wealth? achieving specific milestones? gaining respect or popularity?
Challenging Society's Prescribed Measures of Worth
We are ceaselessly inundated with the narrative that anything less than perfection is a testament to our inadequacy.
Isn't it interesting how our dreams and aspirations are often tethered to society's distorted markers of failure or success? It's like we're moving to a set beat, and when things don't go as planned. It feels like a massive setback.
These transient events seem to challenge the amazingly successful future we had imagined for ourselves.
Must societal programming and life’s setbacks define the level and purpose of our success? Must we then condemn ourselves as failures or confine ourselves within the false and unhelpful beliefs of so-called mediocrity? These notions merely serve to feed false and negative trails, leading to disillusionment and self-reprimand.
Breaking Free from the False Narratives: The Pursuit of Authentic Achievement
At one’s core what is essentially required is an unyielding belief in oneself, and a profound understanding of what truly matters. This inner compass, combined with relentless determination, then becomes our guiding force, propelling us forward.
In the pursuit of an authentic life, no external voice has the authority to dictate our worth or steer us away from the path we've charted for ourselves.
True personal growth and fulfilment lie not in succumbing to these often falsely prescribed concepts of success but in the intrinsic power of the things in our lives which hold deep meaning and are important for our healthy development.
Genuine meaning is not always derived from external validations. No external voice can define our worth.
Our chosen path, steered by our convictions, remains undeterred by false narratives and momentary setbacks.

The Downside of Comparing Success
The fact is, we tend to measure success by comparing ourselves with others. This is something society instils in us, making some feel superior or more valued. This can create a perception that others are inherently happier, better, or more accomplished. However, this is a skewed viewpoint, one that's not only limiting but also hard to shake. Such a perspective negatively impacts our mental well-being and overall contentment in life.
Personal Achievement: A Healthier Approach to Success
A healthier success mindset revolves around personal achievement.
Instead of falling into the comparison trap, individuals who gauge success by their own standards and accomplishments cultivate a more positive life perspective.
Their self-worth stems from their personal challenges and triumphs.
This approach aids in setting realistic goals, reducing self-imposed pressures, and managing stress more effectively. It centres on a viewpoint that emphasizes individual significance and self-value. When we define and appreciate success on our own terms, we cultivate a life of greater contentment and better mental health.
The Dream and the Dreamer: Celebrating Personal Achievements in Everyday Life
We can choose to be both the dream and the dreamer. Every hour, day, month, and year, we're racking up personal achievements, big and small, that collectively define who we are and how we live.
Whether it's confronting our fears and challenges daily, or for someone battling depression, simply managing to start the day by getting out of bed and facing the world. Consider what it it takes to walk away from a toxic situation or relationship, or the care and commitment it requires to care for our loved ones. Then there's the resilience shown in bouncing back and regaining what was once lost, or the sheer devotion and determination involved in parenting.
Every time we reach a personal best, pick up a new skill, expand our understanding, or even just tick off a task on our to-do list, we're experiencing success.
These express just a few examples, of the constant stream of personal achievements that enrich our journey in life.

1 年Thank you, I fully agree that the superficial societal definition of success leaves very few people feeling fulfilled. There is no one thing that will make us feel complete. My own realised definition is that freedom is my personal goal of success. Freedom is being able to solve every single one of your own problems without needing to rely on anyone else for permission. Whatever problem we can't solve for ourselves is to the degree that we aren't free. At this juncture of my life, my aim is to close down as many of those degrees as possible within my means to get closer to my goal. This is keeping in mind how the world will change when the social credit score lands on those who still believe it will never happen. My intention between now and then is to become totally self-sustaining between now and then. i started this by totally downsizing my material holdings ( a Kaiser Soze of sorts) to embark on my current start-up, which I've informed my team will be a _ _ _ _ business within 18 months. My personal vision of success after my recent spiritual journey is vastly different from it was three years ago and now I'm not prepared to compromise my vision one iota.

1 年Love this mission and an excellent read. I am someone who has always struggled to meet societies stereo typical milestones and achievements. This individualised approach is helpful to me.
