Embracing Play: A New Chapter in Leadership and Life

Embracing Play: A New Chapter in Leadership and Life

"Why are you taking a more relaxed approach to branding yourself as a speaker, unlike another client of mine who works tirelessly to pave their path?" This question from my social media marketing partner, Elton, sparked a deep reflection on my journey over the past couple of years.

What do I want to do during my pre-retirement and retirement years?

The answer that emerged was both simple and profound: "I want to PLAY!"

Yes, play! This desire has become a burning passion in my heart, and I feel compelled to express it.

As a Gen X individual, I’ve carried a significant load of responsibilities for both my work and family. Reflecting on my nearly three-decade career in the learning and development industry, I remember the anxiety that accompanied my first experience with facilitation. It was daunting—three months of preparation for a 30-minute session that filled me with fear. Yet, that was just the beginning. Over the years, countless sleepless nights were spent ensuring I delivered quality sessions, driven by a strong sense of responsibility and hard work.

In this journey, I learned that Passion and Responsibility coexist. While passion ignites the fire within me, responsibility transforms that fire into concrete actions. However, as I enter this new phase of life, I feel ready to explore a different combination of elements that have long been sidelined.

What if play could coexist with professionalism?

I believe it can. The workforce demography, needs, motivation and drives are changing now. It is time for us to re-think and adapt to this possibility.

Does embracing play mean sacrificing quality?

I used to think so.

Now, I want to challenge that belief.

Can play be integrated into my role as a Leadership Coach and Speaker without diminishing my impact?

I believe it can.

I’m ready to say goodbye to the old me—the Gen X version that only valued hard work and responsibility. In the past (and occasionally now too), I often judged those who didn’t work as hard as I did. But now, I recognize that life is too short not to enjoy the journey. It’s time to embrace both passion and playfulness in my life.

Does this mean abandoning responsibility?

Not at all! My past has taught me that passion can coexist with commitment and joy. Moving forward, I aim to blend these elements into my work while also honoring my roles as a mother, wife, and daughter.

This new chapter is about more than just personal fulfillment; it’s about modelling for others the importance of play in our professional lives.

How can we create environments where leaders feel free to embrace their playful sides?
How can we encourage our clients and audiences to see play as an essential part of growth?
How can we give equal emphasis to play and other needs, which are fundamental to human?

I want to inspire others to understand that play is not frivolous; it’s a powerful tool for creativity and connection. It fosters innovation and opens doors for deeper engagement. By allowing ourselves to play, we can tap into our authentic selves and bring fresh perspectives into our work.

This newsletter is a reflection of my journey—a journey where play is not just an afterthought but an integral part of who I am becoming. It’s about creating space for authenticity and joy in our professional and personal lives.

So here’s to the next chapter—one where we can all embrace our playful sides while still making meaningful contributions!

Let’s celebrate this new approach together!

YES!! My sista! ?? This is what I need more of.....PLAY! Recently I have been sucked into less play and I am feeling like a "dull Rosh". Life is too short Lily. Being Playful and light has impact and is a legacy one can be proud to be remembered by.

I resonate with this. Play is so, so important to our overall well-being. Being at high achiever, I’ve turned leisure time into a chore or target to meet (for example, I used to set an annual reading target, which eventually took away the joy from reading.) As a freelance writer and solopreneur, I’ve had to set boundaries between work time, play time and rest time, as I have the tendency to work all the time. Now I schedule weekly Artist’s Date for myself - to play, explore and be curious about something. This is inspired by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way.
