Dear Readers,
Welcome to another edition of "Photography for Growth," where we explore the journeys, transformations, and insights that drive personal and professional success. Today, we delve into the importance of being open to pivoting – a vital skill for growth, whether you're navigating life changes or adapting on the fly during a photoshoot.
The Personal Pivot
Transitioning from a long-standing career in education to becoming a solopreneur photographer was a significant pivot in my life. After over 30 years in education, I decided to embrace my passion for photography and embark on a new journey. This shift wasn't just about changing careers; it was about rediscovering myself, taking risks, and pursuing a dream that had long been simmering beneath the surface.
Pivoting isn't always easy. It requires courage to step out of your comfort zone and face the unknown. Yet, it is through these moments of change that we often find our true calling and experience the most profound growth. For me, the move to photography was not just a career change but a leap into a world of creativity, connection, and endless possibilities.
The Business Pivot
In the realm of business, the ability to pivot is equally crucial. Markets change, client needs evolve, and unforeseen challenges arise. A successful business is one that can adapt to these changes with agility and grace. This flexibility allows us to meet new demands, stay relevant, and continue to grow.
Pivoting in the Moment
One of the most poignant examples of the importance of pivoting came during a recent photoshoot with my client, Hannah Hall (CEO Grassports PR) . We had pre-planned the lighting and background setup to create the desired ambiance. However, as the shoot progressed, it became clear that the initial setup wasn't working as we had envisioned. I could see that Hannah was less than relaxed and I wasn’t happy with the images coming through. The artificial lighting wasn't capturing the natural, authentic feel we were aiming for.
Instead of forcing the original plan, we decided to pivot. We shifted to using natural light, allowing the soft, ambient glow to illuminate Hannah's features. This change, along with a less prescribed approach to posing, not only transformed the mood of the shoot but also brought out the genuine, heartfelt expressions that made the images truly special. The result was a series of lovely, authentic photographs that captured Hannah's essence beautifully.
This experience underscored the importance of being adaptable and responsive to the moment. In photography, as in life, plans don't always go as expected. Being open to pivoting – whether it's changing a lighting setup or rethinking a creative approach – can lead to unexpected and often better outcomes.
Conclusion
Whether you're navigating a major life change or adjusting on the fly during a photoshoot, the ability to pivot is a powerful tool for growth. Embracing change, staying flexible, and being willing to adapt to new circumstances can open doors to new opportunities and lead to remarkable results.
As you continue your journey, both personally and professionally, remember that the path to growth is rarely a straight line. Embrace the twists and turns, stay open to new possibilities, and trust that each pivot brings you closer to realizing your true potential.
Until next time,
