Embracing a Pivot Into a New Role: A Guide for Women in Transition

Embracing a Pivot Into a New Role: A Guide for Women in Transition

If You’ve Spent Years Supporting Others and Are Ready to Focus on Yourself, This is for You

Navigating a career change is both brave and transformative. For women who’ve dedicated years to roles in retail, mental health, medical services, or other support-oriented positions, the desire for something new often stems from a longing for purpose, fulfillment, or work-life balance. Sometimes, the change is unplanned—a layoff or a life event forces a pivot. Whatever the reason, you’re not alone, and your skills are more transferable than you might realize.

The hardest part? Believing in your talents and taking that first step forward. That’s where having guidance from a coach, mentor, or friend can make all the difference.

I’m Genevieve Price-Griffin, and I’ve navigated my own life transitions. Now I help women like you embrace new opportunities and step into careers that light them up. This guide will walk you through six practical steps to move into a new role. To get started, we’ll dive into Step 1 with a real-life story to inspire you.

6 Steps to Transition Into a New Career Role

  1. Reflect and Strategize
  2. Define Your Career Goals
  3. Boost Your Skills and Knowledge
  4. Build Your Professional Network
  5. Develop Your Personal Brand
  6. Navigate the Job Market

Step 1: Reflect and Strategize

Before diving into job boards or courses, take time to reflect on what excites you. What skills energize you? Which tasks make you lose track of time? What values matter most in your work? These insights will form the foundation of your career strategy.

Maria’s Pivot from Retail to Social Work

Maria, 42, spent over a decade in retail management, thriving on customer connections and mentoring her team. But over time, she felt unfulfilled, longing to make a deeper impact. A conversation with a close friend about her passion for helping people planted the seed for a career in social work.

Maria began by researching online about transitioning into mental health services. She learned about certification programs and evening classes that fit her schedule. Financial constraints initially held her back, but Maria reached out to local organizations and discovered a scholarship for women re-entering education. She also sought support from a coach to help map out her journey and balance her busy life as a single mom.

Within two years, Maria earned her certification and secured a role as a case manager at a nonprofit, blending her knack for connection with her desire to support others.

Challenge: Fear of starting over and balancing responsibilities. Action Step: Leverage existing skills and take advantage of community resources for education and career transitions. What a Coach Might Say: “Maria, your leadership and empathy in retail are incredible assets. Let’s highlight those transferable skills and focus on actionable steps, like exploring scholarships and certifications. You’re already helping people; this is just a new way to do it.” Benefit: Coaching helped Maria see her retail experience as a strength and provided a structured plan to overcome her fear of change.

The Power of Breaking It Down

Career pivots can feel overwhelming, but breaking the process into manageable steps keeps you focused. Reflecting and strategizing isn’t just about dreaming big; it’s about setting actionable goals that align with your values and skills.

Decide to Take the Next Step

If this story resonates with you, it’s time to take action. Start small: journal about your skills and passions, research new roles or schedule a session with a coach. You don’t have to do it alone.
