Embracing the Patchwork of Life: Phelix Owiny’s Journey as an Artist and Advocate for Vitiligo Awareness

"I developed vitiligo in 2008," Phelix begins, reflecting on the moment that changed his life. From the onset, Phelix faced judgment and ostracism from his peers and community. "There was no escape," he recalls. "I had to look in the mirror and see someone I didn’t recognize, someone who didn’t feel like they belonged in their own skin."?
Over the years, Phelix has risen above these adversities. Though vitiligo wasn’t something he intended to define him, he has embraced the beauty and strength in what others may view as a flaw. His personal growth has transformed how he views himself.?
“Beauty has no skin tone,” Phelix affirms. "We should embrace our skin as it is." He continues to educate others, challenging the stigmas surrounding vitiligo. Phelix recounts how people sometimes assume he has a terminal illness and that he often encounters stares and probing questions. Rather than letting frustration take over, he uses these moments to inform and educate others about vitiligo.?
Photography: A Canvas for Advocacy?
Phelix’s passion for photography was born out of a desire to express himself and create greater awareness about vitiligo. He discovered that photography was the perfect medium for his message. As both an artist and advocate, Phelix uses his camera lens to challenge societal beauty standards.?
"I want to encourage everyone to see the beauty within themselves," he says. Through various photography projects, including collaborations with Spartan Photography, Phelix captures the diversity of the human form and promotes inclusivity.?
"Vitiligo is art," he continues. "My body is a canvas, and I choose to be a subject of art rather than hide." For Phelix, photography is more than a form of expression—it’s a tool to redefine beauty and spark conversations around the condition that shaped his life.?
