Embracing opportunities and growth: Kalesh Menon shares his career journey

Q: What inspired you to join Ingredion, and how has your journey evolved since then??

A: I joined Ingredion India as a finance manager during the Corn Product acquisition of National Starch. Working on integration, scaling the business in India and the potential expansion with synergies from both companies were exciting. I proudly recall my first days with the team, setting up processes and systems for a budding trading business in India and getting to see it grow over the years.??

My journey since then has been an eventful joy ride. I moved to Thailand as a finance controller, leading a bigger team in a more complex manufacturing operation. I also participated in the leadership development (LEAD) program, was nominated for the CEO award for professional excellence, led the FP&A for ASEAN, and now, I’m returning to India.??

Throughout this time, I’ve seen firsthand how cross-functional collaboration can create magic. It has been an amazing learning experience in leadership for me, influencing the business and operations team as the finance business partner and supporting operations to achieve our goals.?

Q: Can you share a memorable project or experience that highlights your personal growth??

A: In my early days as the finance manager in India, the focus was on setting up the processes and controls. During that time, I supported the treasury team during a regional role transition, which shifted my approach to seeking opportunities beyond my role. The leadership team actively encourages stretch assignments to explore your capabilities.???

However, the biggest change in perspective came when I was tasked to lead the Thailand controlling and FP&A function for ASEAN business. This opportunity taught me complexities of operations, honed my team management skills and allowed me to experience the strategic thinking applied by leadership to ensure smooth execution.??

Q: How do you feel supported in your professional and personal development??

A: Throughout my time at Ingredion, I've been fortunate to have supportive peers and leaders who encourage open communication. Receiving regular feedback has been crucial for my development, enabling me to make necessary adjustments and prepare for future challenges. Additionally, leaders make a conscious effort to support employees and help them seek opportunities to grow and advance within Ingredion.??

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work, and what advice would you give to someone considering a similar path??

A: Although finance is often associated with number crunching, I equally enjoy interacting and collaborating across functions and actively participating in problem-solving. I'm fascinated by our product applications and solutions, and I never miss an opportunity to learn about customer interactions from our sales and technical teams. Seeing our operations in action, understanding the processes and talking to the operations team enhances my perspective.?

Today, the finance function is more integrated with other business areas, acting as a key business partner to drive performance. Beyond its traditional roles, there are numerous opportunities to add value through proactive engagement and collaboration.? To continue evolving as a finance professional, my advice is to stay informed, remain curious and maintain a strong service mindset.?

Q: What are your passions outside of work? Any hobbies or activities you particularly enjoy??

A: Outside of work, I like to unwind with a good book. I enjoy reading a variety of content. Recently, I finished Nexus by Yuval Noah Harari — a very engaging and thought-provoking read. Books can transport you to different worlds, fueling curiosity and broadening perspective.?

My family and I also love traveling and exploring new places. We enjoy experiencing diverse cultures, trying new foods and creating lasting memories together. It's the perfect way to recharge amidst a busy schedule.?
