There is immense power in taking control of one's mental health. For me, it has been a transformative journey that has not only brought personal growth but also allowed me to become a force for good in the world. By learning to manage my emotions and reactions, I have discovered a newfound sense of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and mindfulness. This article explores my journey of self-discovery and the importance of mental health in shaping one's life and interactions with others.
The Struggle with Emotional Control
In the past, I often found myself at the mercy of my emotions, particularly anxiety and anger. My aggressive posturing only served to shift attention away from the root of the problem, and onto my reactions. Repeatedly, I lost battles simply because I allowed my emotions to dictate my actions.
I eventually realized that some people would intentionally provoke me, knowing that my triggered response would overshadow the issue at hand. It was at this point that I decided to take control of my reactions and regain my power.
The Foundation of Self-Awareness, Emotional Intelligence, and Mindfulness
My journey to self-awareness began with recognizing when my triggers were being pushed, and subsequently, learning to control my reactions. By embracing emotional intelligence and mindfulness, I laid the foundation for living my happiest life. I often wish I had gained this understanding 20 years ago, as it would have undoubtedly changed the course of my life.

Finding Balance and Taking Responsibility
Through my experiences, I have come to understand my place in society and how I fit into the broader context of the world. I have found balance within my universe of understanding and taken responsibility for myself. I have learned that I can influence others, but I cannot control them. Most importantly, I now know that I am not a product of my trauma, but a survivor of everything life has challenged me with from childhood to law enforcement, and even combat.
Living a Life of Love, Understanding, and Grace
Today, I live a life filled with love, understanding, and grace. I have embraced my experiences and emerged as someone who can contribute to making the world a better place. Anything is possible when we work together, and I am grateful to my family and friends who have supported me on this journey.
