Embracing My Full Self: The Power of Complexity

In a world that often seeks to simplify and categorize, I’ve come to realize the importance of embracing and sharing the full complexity of who I am. I am more than just one thing. My life is a rich tapestry of experiences, roles, and identities, each contributing to my perspective and my approach to leadership.

I am a Black woman. I am a mother. I am a second-generation native of San Francisco. I am a retired professional ballet dancer. I am an artist. I am a proud Cal grad. I am a marketing and communications executive. I am a boy mom. I am a daughter, a sister, a niece, an aunt, and a cousin. I am a former Raiderette. And I am so much more. Each of these facets shapes who I am and what I bring to every role I undertake.

Too often, when I walk into a room, I am seen only as a Black woman. While this identity is central to who I am, it is but one part of my story. The lessons I learned from the Presidential Leadership Scholars program have taught me the importance of sharing my full self with others. By embracing and communicating the fullness of who I am, I not only honor my journey but also invite others to see beyond the surface.

What I Bring to the Table

  1. Diverse Experience: My background as a professional ballet dancer and a Raiderette has instilled in me discipline, grace under pressure, and a deep understanding of performance and presentation. These experiences translate into my executive roles, where I bring creativity, precision, and a unique approach to problem-solving.
  2. Community Connection: As a second-generation San Franciscan and a Jack and Jill mom, I am deeply rooted in my community. This connection allows me to bring a grounded, empathetic perspective to my work, ensuring that my strategies and decisions are inclusive and community-focused.
  3. Educational Excellence: My education at Cal provided me with a strong foundation in critical thinking, communication, and leadership. I leverage this academic rigor in every professional endeavor, ensuring that my contributions are thoughtful, strategic, and impactful.
  4. Multifaceted Leadership: Being a mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, and cousin has honed my ability to nurture, support, and lead with empathy. These roles have taught me the importance of collaboration, patience, and resilience.

Today, I stand in my truth and invite you to get to know the full, authentic me. I am committed to bringing my whole self to every professional and personal interaction, knowing that this authenticity is what makes me a powerful and effective leader. I also look forward to learning more about those I have had the honor to call my friends and family, those I am still getting to know, and those I will meet in the future.

By embracing our full selves, we can create more inclusive, innovative, and dynamic environments. I challenge you to look beyond the surface and recognize the richness that comes from our diverse experiences and identities.

As we continue to navigate an ever-changing world, let us remember that our complexities are not weaknesses but strengths. Each layer of who we are adds depth to our character and value to our contributions. I am Lauren Simone Vance Macmadu, and I am proud to stand as a multifaceted leader ready to make a meaningful impact.

Thanks Lauren for these inspiring words. It's so "easy" to label someone in one category and leave her/him there, while there's so much more to learn when we have the patience and willigness to know her/him deeper. A big hug!

Great piece. Proud of all your achievements. Wishing you continued success.
