In the quest for self-fulfillment, many of us are told that we must find our one true calling—a singular passion or purpose that will define our lives. However, this notion can often lead to frustration and a sense of inadequacy when we fail to pinpoint that one thing that sets our soul on fire. What if the reason you can't find your one true calling is that you have more than one?
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the world around me. My interests spanned a wide range of activities, from arts and sciences to sports and writing. I could never quite understand the societal pressure to find "one true calling" and stick with it for life. This expectation seemed to contradict my natural inclination to explore and experiment. Over the years, my journey has been anything but linear, filled with twists, turns, and numerous fresh starts. Underlying all these experiences, childhood trauma played a significant role in shaping my resilience and diverse passions.
The Early Years: A Mosaic of Interests
?As a child, I was the kid who signed up for every club and activity. One year I was immersed in painting and drawing, the next, I was captivated by the mysteries of the cosmos. My great grandmother encouraged my curiosity. Later, as my teens were approaching, amidst this exploration, childhood trauma introduced an additional layer to my journey, compelling me to seek solace and escape through various interests.
Entering adulthood, the pressure to choose one career path intensified. I often heard comments about my apparent indecisiveness, which discouraged posed to simmer or crush my exploration of other avenues of interest. "You need to pick one thing and stick to it," I would hear. I tried to follow their advice, immersing myself in various fields, from business to computer programming, marketing, writing, etc., hoping to find that one passion that would define my life. However, the echoes of trauma often influenced my choices, driving me to find meaning and healing in my pursuits. The childhood trauma that I endured definitely left a few marks on me that helped push me in areas that I would not have thought of before. Escape routes is what these areas consisted of, which allowed room for more inquisitiveness.
My tendency to dive headfirst into new endeavors meant that I was often starting over. I wasn’t afraid back then, nor now, to take risks, whether it meant moving to a new city for a job opportunity or enrolling in a completely different course of study. Anyone that knows me, knows this. Each fresh start brought excitement, but also the challenge of explaining my seemingly erratic journey to others. Trauma had instilled in me a unique resilience, allowing me to face uncertainty and change with courage.
One pattern became clear: my interests would wane over time, but they were never truly forgotten. I would find myself drawn back to past passions, picking up where I left off with renewed energy and insight. This cycle of waning and returning allowed me to deepen my understanding and skills in multiple areas, even if it appeared scattered to outside observers. The process of returning to familiar interests was often a healing journey, providing comfort and continuity amidst the chaos.
Over time, I realized that having multiple callings was not a weakness but a strength. Embracing my multifaceted identity liberated me from the frustration of trying to fit into a single mold. I began to see my diverse interests as complementary rather than conflicting. Each passion added a unique thread to the tapestry of my life, enriching my experiences and broadening my perspectives. My resilience, forged in the crucible of trauma, became the bedrock upon which I built my multifaceted life.
I learned to integrate my various interests into my daily life. Instead of seeing them as separate compartments, I found ways to weave them together. My love for writing became a tool for reflecting on my scientific and inquisitive pursuits. My interest in psychology enhanced my teaching methods. By acknowledging and valuing each of my passions, I created a holistic approach to life that felt authentic and fulfilling.

Today, I celebrate my journey of diverse passions, resilience, and healing. I no longer feel the need to confine myself to a single calling. Instead, I embrace the richness that comes from living a life filled with varied interests and continuous growth. My story is a testament to the power of embracing a multifaceted identity, pursuing what excites me, and allowing my passions to guide me on a transformative journey of self-discovery and fulfillment. I am not saying that it was an easy road to walk, and I’ve found all of the answers, but walking to my own beat is what I have found to be the best option for me. It’s not perfect though, there are areas that I can still grow in and am still learning to live in...and I am okay with that. Staying focused is one of the biggest challenges that I have, but I am always a work in progress, just as we all are. By facing trauma and harnessing its lessons, I have built a life that honors every part of who I am.
