It goes without saying, but change can be difficult in any part of life. People are often afraid of change because, let’s face it, change forces you out of your comfort zone. When change occurs, everything comfortable becomes "new" (which usually just means "different"), for instance the coffee machine you once mastered now has an AI upgrade with 20 confusing buttons. Change often feels like trading your favorite slippers for a pair of flashy, uncomfortable shoes: they might be stylish, but who really wants to break them in? In the end, it's not the change itself but the unknown that keeps us clinging to our predictable routines and trusty old slippers.
Leading through change can be one of the most difficult endeavors an organization has to go through. Employees are comfortable with the old policies or procedures. They have mastered all the work arounds in the old system and do not see the point in getting something new.
Leading through change requires leaders to gain buy in by providing a clear vision, open communication, and leading with empathy.
1.???? First, articulate the purpose behind the change, showing how it aligns with the organization's goals. Keep communication frequent and transparent to address concerns and build trust, providing a platform for feedback.
2.???? Empower employees by involving them in the process and offering support, like training or resources, to ease the transition.
3.???? Recognize and address the emotional impact, showing empathy and understanding for challenges. Celebrating milestones reinforces commitment, helping people see the benefits of change and motivating them to move forward together.
At the end of the day, change is inevitable. Leaders who embrace change and lean into its benefits will be better equipped with leading their teams through it.
