A day with 'Moneeza'

The Early Years

"With rebellion, awareness is born" – Albert Camus

As the saying goes, "With rebellion, awareness is born," and this quote couldn't be more fitting for Moneeza's journey. She was born into a conservative yet enlightened family, with a father who was a renowned surgeon. In a household where medicine seemed to be the natural choice for all children, Moneeza dared to think differently. Her aversion to the tales of medical misery led her to resolve that medicine was not her calling. However, convincing her mother for the same wasn’t an easy task.

Things got even harder when her dad passed away while she was in middle school. Her brothers and sisters were all on their way to becoming doctors, and her mom was busy taking care of the hospital her dad left behind. But Moneeza had a different dream – she wanted to study commerce, even though it wasn't what her family had in mind.

Venturing into the Unknown

"Failure is not opposite of success; it is part of success" – Arianna Huffington

Moneeza's determination to pursue her own path led her through a series of decisions that defied expectations. Despite family pressures, she transitioned from pre-medical to pre-engineering, a decision she knew would require gradual persuasion of her mother. As she approached her education, her eyes were set on the coveted IBA for BBA and MBA programs. However, life had other plans, and her IBA dreams were dashed. Yet, it was during this moment of disappointment that a new opportunity emerged – the Basic Accountancy Course (BAC) offered by ICAP, marking her entry into the world of chartered accountancy.

Exploring A Whole New World

"Opportunity follows struggle. It follows effort. It follows hard work. It doesn’t come before." – Shelby Steele

Moneeza's journey into the world of finance was not without its challenges. From passing BAC exams to navigating the demanding landscape of article ship, she faced grueling hours, tight deadlines, and unyielding determination. The predominantly male industry demanded twice the effort from her to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her male counterparts. Moneeza's journey wasn't just about professional growth; it was about carving a path for other women to follow. Her article ship days were akin to diamond mining – a period of relentless effort that molded her into a resilient and disciplined finance professional.

Leading from the Front

"Leadership belongs to those who take it" – Sheryl Sandberg

Moneeza's journey wasn't just about proving herself as an equal; it was about leading by example. As she progressed in her career, she encountered the unique challenges of leading in a male-dominated environment. With tact, discretion, and firmness, she developed a leadership style that inspired teamwork and yielded results. This journey, marked by dedication and hard work, led her to an unexpected milestone – partnership within just eight years of qualifying. Balancing the demands of her career and family, she shattered glass ceilings and became the first lady partner in Pakistan's big four firms.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Resilience

Moneeza Usman Butt's journey is a shining example of how determination, courage, and an unwavering commitment to one's passion can lead to groundbreaking achievements. Her story reiterates the importance of challenging norms, embracing opportunities, and persisting in the face of adversity.

From a personal perspective, Moneeza's journey resonates deeply with me. It's a reminder that each of us has the power to chart our unique path, irrespective of societal expectations or preconceived notions. Her story reinforces my belief that determination and resilience can conquer even the most formidable challenges, inspiring us all to strive for greatness.
