Embracing the journey of inclusion: My transformational experience with BASE
BASE (British Association for Supported Employment)
Lee Corless , Head of Global Expansion, People & Culture, Rangam Consultants and BASE Trustee.
The warm summer of 2021 brought forth a remarkable turning point in my life, as I was introduced to a world-changing organization known as BASE (British Association for Supported Employment) . It all began with an unexpected email from Huw Davies CBE , the then CEO of BASE, inviting me to share my insights through a keynote speech at their Annual Conference in the charming city of Brighton. Little did I know, that this interaction would ignite a series of events that would reshape my perspective on disability hiring, neurodiversity, and the power of authentic inclusion.
Admittedly, I embarked on this journey with limited knowledge about BASE. I was in the midst of transitioning from my role at JP Morgan Chase, where I had proudly spearheaded a pioneering Autism at Work program. Huw became the first person outside my family and new company to learn about my plans. He had recognized my expertise in building and leading global programs that supported individuals with autism in the workplace. Huw's enthusiasm to have me deliver the keynote stemmed from this recognition, and with my characteristic all-in commitment, I accepted the invitation
However, it wasn't just about giving a speech. It was about diving deep into the essence of BASE - its mission, history, and triumphs. As I explored the organization's narrative, I found myself both impressed and inspired. Some anecdotes raised an intrigued eyebrow, but they were a testament to Huw's passionate nature. He had a unique ability to wholeheartedly celebrate every success, no matter how unconventional.
My first experience with BASE was this conference, a spirited congregation of minds united by a collective desire for positive change. The CEO transition was looming and Huw was about to pass the torch to a new leader, Laura Davis . With the change in leadership, I observed from a distance as the transition unfolded.
It was a pivotal moment when Laura took the reins. Our first encounter unveiled a shared fervour for the cause. The vision of inclusive employment resonated deeply with both of us. This vision soon expanded to encompass a collaborative partnership between BASE, a not-for-profit organization, and Rangam , a corporate powerhouse equally committed to driving cultural transformation within businesses. Our mutual goal was to amplify the impact of neurodiversity in the workforce.
Conversations between Laura and me gained momentum, sparking discussions about a partnership between our two organizations. Our aspirations were grand, underpinned by an unwavering determination to make a meaningful difference. Laura's unbridled drive and visionary outlook illuminated the path forward for BASE.
During one of our conversations, Laura extended an invitation that took me by surprise and elation - she asked if I would consider becoming a trustee of BASE. Without hesitation, I accepted. The synergy between BASE's mission and my unwavering quest for change aligned seamlessly. It was a call to make a lasting impact not only for my children's generation but also for the future that Rangam envisioned.
The ink was barely dry on the partnership agreement when the wheels of action began to turn. Collaborative strategies were meticulously drafted and set into motion. My journey as a trustee commenced, marked by an unprecedented surge of passion and commitment. Every day, I found myself eagerly embracing the opportunity to support Laura and BASE in their transformative endeavours. The next 12 months and beyond held boundless promise, a canvas upon which we would paint a brighter future of inclusive employment.

The heart of this partnership extended beyond contractual obligations. It was driven by a shared goal of changing lives, by not just recognizing diversity but celebrating it. Disability hiring, a cornerstone of our mission, went beyond a checkbox exercise. It became a beacon of opportunity, channelling the talents and perspectives of neurodiverse individuals who had been underrepresented for far too long. The term "neurodiversity" itself took on a new dimension - it wasn't just a buzzword, but a mantra we lived by, ensuring that the work culture we shaped embraced the unique strengths and perspectives of every individual.
As the partnership evolved, so did our commitment to creating a lasting change. With each step forward, we aimed to shatter the glass ceiling that had kept so many talented minds from reaching their full potential. The alliance between BASE and Rangam Consultants was not just a collaboration on paper; it was a synergy of shared values, a pact to revolutionize the landscape of corporate culture.
In the vast expanse of this journey, I find myself humbled by the people I've met, the stories I've heard, and the transformations I've witnessed. The words "disability hiring," "neurodiversity," and "autism" ceased to be mere terms; they became living embodiments of human potential, resilience, and innovation. Every conversation, every success story, every milestone achieved reaffirmed the power of unity, collaboration, and the unshakeable belief in a future where inclusion isn't an exception, but the rule.
As I pen down this reflection on my journey with BASE, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of something greater than myself. The chapters that lie ahead are laden with promise, and I eagerly anticipate the milestones we will achieve together. With each passing day, my commitment to supporting BASE and forging an enduring partnership with Rangam Consultants deepens. Together, we stand on the cusp of change, ready to rewrite the narrative of employment, diversity, and inclusion.
And as I take the next step in this transformative journey, I am reminded that the path to a brighter future is paved with collective dedication, unyielding passion, and a resolute belief in the power of every individual to make a difference.
