When we see social media profiles gleam with perfection and success, it’s easy to get caught up in showing only our best selves. We curate our lives with precision, sharing our highlights and victories, all while tucking away the less shiny parts.
This polished presentation is what Gina Gotthilf refers to as our “A side”—the side we want everyone to see.
But what about our “B side”?
The “B side” is where the magic truly happens.
It’s the side filled with our struggles, our fears, and our failures. It’s where we find our most genuine selves, the parts of us that don’t always get the spotlight.
And it’s time we started sharing these parts more.
Imagine if….instead of just seeing someone’s latest promotion or vacation photos, we also saw their journey—the late nights, the doubts, and the setbacks. Picture the connection and empathy that could blossom from such honesty.
When we show our B sides, we invite others to see us as we are: real, imperfect, and human.
Sharing our B sides doesn’t mean airing our deepest secrets to everyone we meet. It’s about being open about our experiences, even the tough ones. It’s about telling the story of how we got to where we are, bumps and all.
When we share our B sides, we allow others to see that they’re not alone in their struggles. We create a space where vulnerability is not just accepted, but celebrated.
Think about the last time someone shared a personal struggle with you. Didn’t it make you feel closer to them? Didn’t it give you a sense of relief, knowing that someone else faces challenges too?
That’s the power of the B side.
It connects us in ways that the A side never could.
So, let’s make a pact to share more of our B sides.
Let’s talk about the projects that didn’t work out, the dreams we had to let go of, and the days when we just didn’t have it all together.
Let’s show the world that success is not just about the destination, but also the journey.
By embracing our B sides, we become more relatable, more authentic, and ultimately, more human. We give others permission to do the same, creating a ripple effect of honesty and connection.
Social media often feels isolated and superficial, sharing our B sides can bring us closer together.
The next time you’re tempted to post only the perfect moments, think about sharing a bit of your B side.
Talk about the effort behind that achievement, the lessons learned from failure, or the courage it took to try again. You might be surprised at how much more meaningful your interactions become.
In the end, our B sides are just as important as our A sides. They make us who we are, and sharing them can make the world a more compassionate place.
So, here’s to embracing our imperfections and sharing our stories—both the polished and the messy, the triumphs and the trials. Here’s to showing the world our true, beautiful selves.??
???BK Biweekly Quote:? “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.” — Brené Brown
??BK Tiny Tip:? The next time you share an accomplishment, include a brief note about a challenge you faced along the way. It could be a small setback, a moment of doubt, or a lesson learned. This touch of authenticity can make your story more relatable and inspire others to embrace their own journeys with all their ups and downs.
??BK Mind-blowing Fact:? Research by social scientist Brené Brown found that people who are willing to be vulnerable and share their true selves are not only more connected and empathetic but also happier and more resilient. Brown’s studies revealed that embracing vulnerability is key to experiencing joy, creativity, and a deep sense of belonging.
??BK Journaling Prompt:? Reflect on a recent challenge or setback you experienced. How did it shape your journey, and what did you learn from it? Write about how sharing this experience with others might help them see the real, imperfect, and resilient person you are. How can embracing and sharing your B side foster deeper connections and authenticity in your relationships?

“B Sides”. When music was sold in the form of of a disk that revolved at 45 rpm, brilliantly called a 45. There was an A side and a B side. These records always had one side which was supposed to be the popular song and the other was a good song but not that the companies considered great. Until The Artist, many of his B sides where so great that an album was done of just the B sides. We bought the b side when we got the A side, we just needed to listen to it. Thanks for that run down memory lane. Now back to the Java.
