Embracing imperfect progress: navigating the path to a just and sustainable future

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of perfection. But as we recently explored in a recent Big Conversation, creating a more just and sustainable economic system often means embracing imperfect progress as we navigate the path, one imperfect step at a time.

If you haven’t joined us yet, our Big Conversations in partnership with the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland (WEAll) , are informal 30 minute lunchtime discussions centred around a topic. We bring together a mixed audience of big thinkers who are united in their desire to challenge current economic thinking.

The tension of transition

During our conversation, we delved into the core duality we face as business leaders and change agents working towards a better future. It's about acknowledging the setbacks of current systems while celebrating the progress we've made, no matter how small. Insight alone isn't enough; we need bold action to make meaningful change happen.

Redefining success and celebrating incremental wins

One key theme that emerged was the importance of redefining success beyond traditional economic growth. We shared examples of how our organisations are measuring success through more holistic metrics like community impact and employee wellbeing. By moving beyond narrow financial motives, we open up new possibilities and create space to celebrate every step forward, no matter how imperfect.

Addressing root causes and building community wealth

We also touched on the crucial aspect of addressing the root causes of issues, not just treating symptoms. One participant shared their amazing experience working on a project that teaches cooking and cultural skills to build resilience, rather than simply funding a food bank. By focusing on projects that tackle underlying problems, we can create more sustainable, long-lasting change while aligning with the principles of Community Wealth Building.

Navigating challenges and influencing change

Let's be real – the path to progress isn't always smooth sailing, especially when working with those in positions of power. Bridging the gap between community initiatives and local government requires some finesse – aligning goals, communicating effectively, and finding common ground. But by leveraging short-term wins, we can pave the way for better long-term strategies.

Embracing experimentation and imperfect progress

Despite the obstacles, we're all about embracing imperfect progress and experimentation. As one wise participant put it, "We cannot afford to wait for the perfect plan. Taking action, even if it won't immediately change the world, is crucial." So let's maintain that hope and keep experimenting our way to progress!

?

The path to a better future may not be a straight line, but with collective care, courage, and many small steps, we can nurture a Wellbeing Economy rooted in justice and regeneration. Perfection is overrated – our willingness to try, learn, and grow is what will seed the transformation we want to see.

So, what's one practical yet imperfect step you could take to further your efforts? Share your thoughts in the comments.

This is such an inspiring initiative Kirsty! Embracing imperfect progress is crucial in our journey towards a Wellbeing Economy. It's refreshing to see a focus on community wealth and redefining success beyond traditional metrics. One imperfect step I think that I could take is to actively support and participate in local sustainability projects, even if they start small. Every effort counts, and collective action can lead to significant change. ??

Not sure this is on point Kirsty Innes, conscious culture and purposeful branding but the Federal Opposition in Australia has just announced plans to repurpose 7 coal fired power plants into nuclear generation sites. This will likely be a key election issue in 2025. There is "sticker shock" attached but without it the transition to net zero is unclear. Plus it offers reskilling opportunities to those working in the regional areas where the sites will be located. How would a debate about the merits of this plan be handled in Scotland? I have my doubts we have the maturity to really assess this properly in Australia.
