"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
It's a question that echoes through the hallways of high schools, reaching the ears of students who are just beginning to explore the vast possibilities that lie ahead. Perhaps, even as an adult, you find yourself pondering this question.
I remember grappling with this question myself, and it led me to believe that growing up was a fixed destination, a predetermined choice.
However, as I ventured into adulthood, I realized that this belief was inherently dysfunctional. Growing up isn't a static endpoint; it's an ongoing journey. Instead of searching for the 'right' choice, I discovered the importance of continuous growth and adaptation.
Breaking Free from the Illusion
The question itself "What do you want to be when you grow up?" contains a societal narrative that frames growing up as a linear journey with a predetermined destination. This illusion can be limiting, creating unnecessary pressure and fostering the idea that there's only one correct path.
In reality, life is dynamic, filled with twists and turns. And really, who wants to grow up? Instead, let's keep growing.
Embracing the concept of continuous growth liberates us from the confines of a singular narrative and opens the door to a multitude of possibilities.
The Fallacy of the 'Right' Path
The pursuit of the 'right' path is also mirage that often leads to frustration and anxiety. How many times have you avoided making a decision because you were afraid to make the wrong choice? I'll raise my hand to this one.
In truth, there is no universal roadmap for success or fulfillment. Each individual's journey is unique, shaped by personal experiences, choices, and unforeseen opportunities.
Rather than fixating on finding the one correct path, we should focus on adapting and evolving. Life is about exploration, learning, and embracing change.

Choosing a Different Plan
As adults, the pressure to stick to a predefined path can persist. However, the realization that there isn't a singular 'right' choice empowers us to pivot when needed.
Please read this and let it sink in: You don't have to be right, you just have to be thriving.
If a particular career or life plan isn't working, it's not a sign of failure but an opportunity for growth. Choosing a different plan doesn't mean giving up; it signifies resilience and a commitment to personal development.
Thriving in the Infinite Possibilities
The essence of life lies not in adhering to a predetermined script but in thriving amidst the infinite possibilities. It's about continuously evolving, learning from experiences, and adapting to new circumstances. The goal is not to choose the right path but to embrace the journey and find fulfillment in the process.
A Different Question To Ponder
Life is not about reaching a fixed destination or knowing what you want to be when you grow up. Instead it is about a perpetual journey of curiosity, self-discovery, and growth. Let go of the illusion of a 'right' choice, and instead, relish the freedom to explore diverse paths.
So, let me ask you a better question; "What are you enjoying learning or trying out right now?"
