Embracing Glimmers: Navigating Emotions and Finding Tranquillity in Everyday Moments

In a bid to enhance my self-awareness, I embarked on a journey to identify my emotional triggers. Whenever I encountered a trigger, I recorded it in a journal along with my subsequent reaction. Then, I would do some introspection to uncover the underlying cause of my response and attempted to devise more rational reactions to use in similar future scenarios. The aim was to empower myself to navigate my emotions better and maintain greater control over my reactions to situations.

However, the more I actively sought out triggers, the more I discovered them. As the saying goes, it's easy to spot a yellow car when you are preoccupied with the thought of a yellow car. Before long, even the word "trigger" itself became a trigger!

Sometime later, I stumbled upon a TikTok video where a woman discussed the concept of "Glimmers." Glimmers, as she explained, stand in contrast to triggers. They encompass those instances that bring about feelings of delight and tranquillity, capable of soothing and calming our nervous system. These moments emit an aura of safety and calmness, often arising from insignificant or fleeting occurrences in the present.

The true beauty of glimmers lies in their accessibility and diversity, seamlessly fitting into our daily routines. They range from the simple pleasure of sipping morning coffee to enjoying a leisurely walk with a furry companion or sharing an infectious laugh with a loved one.

At the workplace, recognizing these glimmers might prove more challenging. Amidst demanding schedules and looming deadlines, it's easy to overlook the positive aspects of our work. Yet, these glimmers stand as reminders of the intrinsic worth of our contributions. They can manifest in various forms, including recognition, collaboration, and appreciation. A mere "thank you" from a colleague can serve as a glimmer, reinforcing a sense of value and belonging.

To cultivate glimmers in the workplace, practice gratitude by reflecting on the positive aspects of your job. Additionally, become a source of positivity for others—spread goodwill and create meaningful connections through friendly and supportive interactions.

The journal entries? Well, I still make them. However, rather than focusing on triggers, I've introduced a new concept: the "Glimmer Menu." This menu comprises a personalized list of activities, experiences, and practices that bring me joy and peace. I keep them close.??In the words of Jack Gilbert, “We must risk delight. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world.”

As you traverse the maze of your daily routine, make it a point to lean into your glimmers. When a moment of delight or tranquillity arises, embrace it fully. Inhale deeply, allowing the moment to linger. As you exhale, release any tension that may have taken root.

Glimmers are not just little joys but anchors of serenity that can steady your ship amid waves of chaos.
