A Journey Through Decades of Educational Innovation

Reflecting on my journey as an educator, I've witnessed the evolution of educational technologies and methodologies firsthand. As a professor, business school dean, and chief academic officer, I have collaborated with numerous companies to develop custom corporate training programs and designed thousands of trainings/courses with teams of instructional designers and technologists.

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and redefining roles, continuous skill development and education have never been more critical for maintaining a competitive edge. As AI technologies evolve, leaders and professionals must adapt by expanding their skill sets and embracing new learning opportunities. The future of work is not about AI replacing humans but about AI enhancing human capabilities.


?? The Importance of Continuous Learning and Adaptation

The rapid adoption of AI tools, like generative AI, has highlighted the need for a new kind of leadership intelligence. Leaders must stay informed about AI advancements to effectively guide their teams through the technological landscape. This involves not only understanding AI technologies but also being able to communicate their benefits and address any anxieties employees might have regarding these changes.


Integrating Technology Tools to Enhance Training Programs

Over the years, I've seen various technologies transform the way we build and deliver training programs. From early computer-based training modules to sophisticated online learning platforms, each innovation has offered new possibilities for engaging and effective education.

  • Early Adoption of E-Learning: We pioneered online learning, leveraging internet-based platforms to provide flexible and accessible education. These tools allowed learners to access materials anytime, anywhere, breaking down geographical and time barriers.
  • Augmented and Virtual Reality: More recently, we’ve seen augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) incorporated into training programs. These immersive technologies offer hands-on experience in a virtual environment, making learning more engaging and effective.


Custom Corporate Training and Diverse Delivery Approaches

Working with various companies, we have tailored training programs to meet specific organizational needs. This customization ensures that the training is relevant and impactful, addressing the unique challenges and goals of each business.

  • Blended Learning Models: Combining traditional face-to-face instruction with online components has proven effective. This approach caters to different learning styles and preferences, providing a balanced and comprehensive learning experience.
  • Microlearning: By breaking down complex topics into smaller, digestible segments, we’ve made learning more manageable and less overwhelming. Microlearning is particularly effective for busy professionals who need to fit training into their tight schedules.

Introduction to AI and Generative AI

Leaders should have a foundational understanding of AI technologies, including generative AI, which can produce content, ideas, and solutions at scale. This knowledge will enable leaders to integrate AI effectively into training programs and development initiatives.

  • Tip 1: Schedule regular AI-focused workshops or seminars to keep your team updated on the latest AI technologies and trends.
  • Tip 2: Encourage self-paced learning by providing access to online courses and resources on AI and generative AI.


AI Learning as the Future of Instructional Design

AI is poised to revolutionize instructional design just as the internet transformed online learning. Leaders must recognize the potential of AI to personalize and enhance learning experiences, making education more accessible and effective.

  • Tip 1: Implement AI-driven personalized learning paths to cater to the unique needs and strengths of each employee.
  • Tip 2: Foster a culture of innovation by regularly reviewing and integrating emerging AI tools and techniques into your training programs.


Positioning AI in the Instructional Design Process

AI can serve various roles within instructional design teams, such as acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide insights and data or as a collaborative teammate to assist in creating engaging content. Understanding these roles helps leaders allocate resources efficiently.

  • Tip 1: Assign AI-specific roles within your instructional design team, such as AI tool specialists or AI content advisors.
  • Tip 2: Utilize AI analytics to gather insights on learner engagement and performance, refining your programs accordingly.


AI Tools for Development and Media Creation

There are numerous AI tools available for specific tasks in instructional design, such as content creation, assessment development, and multimedia production. Leaders should be familiar with these tools to leverage their capabilities and streamline the development process.


  • Tip 1: Create a centralized repository of AI tools and resources that team members can easily access and utilize for content creation.
  • Tip 2: Provide hands-on training sessions to ensure your team is proficient in using AI tools for media creation and development.


AI as an Enhancement, Not a Replacement

AI should be viewed as a complement to human creativity and expertise. While AI can handle routine tasks, the critical aspects of instructional design—such as crafting compelling narratives and fostering engagement—remain firmly in the human domain.

  • Tip 1: Highlight success stories where AI has enhanced human creativity and productivity, reinforcing the collaborative nature of AI.
  • Tip 2: Promote cross-functional projects where AI and human expertise are integrated to solve complex problems and drive innovation.


80/20 Rule in AI Utilization

AI can accomplish 80% of the instructional design work, such as generating content and analyzing data, leaving the remaining 20%—the nuanced, creative tasks—to human experts. Leaders should adopt this approach to maximize efficiency and impact.

  • Tip 1: Identify routine tasks that can be automated by AI, allowing your team to focus on strategic and creative activities.
  • Tip 2: Set clear guidelines on the division of labor between AI tools and human efforts, ensuring optimal productivity and engagement.


Optimized Prompting for Instructional Design

Effective use of AI tools requires skillful prompting. Leaders should learn how to phrase prompts and queries to AI systems to get the most relevant and useful outputs for their instructional design projects.

  • Tip 1: Develop a set of best practices for crafting effective prompts that yield valuable outputs from AI tools.
  • Tip 2: Conduct regular training sessions to enhance your team's prompting skills, ensuring they can leverage AI tools effectively.
