Forward Thinking Organizations Act Now; Others Face an Eleventh-Hour FHIR Drill
In an age where digital transformation is revolutionizing industries, healthcare stands at a pivotal juncture. At Digital2DNA, we are at the forefront of this evolution, specializing in healthcare digital transformation with a focus on automation, integration, and developing cutting-edge interfaces. Our expertise in utilizing healthcare data and adherence to sharing standards like Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) positions us as leaders in this transformative era.
The recent CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule (CMS-0057-F) marks a significant milestone in this journey. Published on January 17, 2024, this rule is a testament to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) commitment to advancing interoperability and streamlining prior authorization processes. It mandates Medicare Advantage organizations, state Medicaid and CHIP Fee-for-Service programs, Medicaid managed care plans, CHIP managed care entities, and Qualified Health Plan issuers on the Federally Facilitated Exchanges to implement and maintain HL7? FHIR? APIs. This initiative aims to enhance the electronic exchange of healthcare data and simplify prior authorization processes, thereby fostering a more efficient and patient-centered healthcare system.
The foundation for this transformation was laid with the May 2020 CMS Interoperability and Patient Access final rule, which set the stage for improved access to interoperable patient data. This new rule builds upon that foundation, reducing the burden of prior authorization processes and bringing us closer to an API-driven, automated future in healthcare.
As a company deeply embedded in this transformation, Digital2DNA is excited about the prospects this rule brings. By January 2026, impacted payers must implement operational provisions, with compliance dates for API development and enhancement requirements beginning January 1, 2027. These timelines provide a clear roadmap for healthcare entities to adapt and evolve.
