Embracing the Fluid Future: The Rise of Blended Living in Hospitality

The Blended Living Movement is redefining how we balance work, leisure, and travel. As the lines blur between these traditionally separate activities, people are increasingly seeking flexibility in how they live, work, and relax, driving a shift in the hospitality industry.

This movement, which represents the next evolution of the "bleisure" (business and leisure) trend, requires hotels and other spaces to adapt by offering seamless transitions between workspaces and relaxation areas for a world that has ingrained a more flexible and fluid approach to time and space.

Chapter 4 of The New Quality of Time explores the impact of blended living and how it manifests in hospitality, including in:??

  • Flexibility: Guests expect accommodations to support both work and leisure, with adaptable spaces and services that cater to both needs.?

  • Hybrid Work: As digital nomads and hybrid workers grow in numbers, the demand for extended stays and co-working spaces has surged.?

  • Design Impact: Hotels must rethink their designs, incorporating elements like biophilic design, multifunctional spaces, and tech-enhanced environments to suit various needs.?

This shift has also proven profitable, with hotels integrating co-working spaces seeing a 10% boost in RevPAR (Revenue per Available Room), further highlighting the financial benefits of adapting to these evolving guest preferences.

There is a transformation in how we live, work, and travel, highlighting the growing trend of blended living. As work and leisure increasingly merge, hotels must adapt by creating flexible, multifunctional spaces that cater to a variety of needs.??

Anne Becker Olins , Global Chief Design & Technical Services Officer for Ultra Luxury & Luxury at Accor discusses this transformation and how it translates to design in the report, "We are breaking with the principles of traditional hotel design to fashion innovative spaces and thoughtful ambiances…Ideally, it is our philosophy to provide guests with the freedom to move around like someone in a private house. Any barriers or restrictions will limit the experience and mindset of (ultra) luxury hotel design."

The design challenge is to create environments that seamlessly transition between relaxation, work, and socialization while incorporating elements like biophilic design and technology. This shift presents significant opportunities for the hospitality industry to innovate, meet evolving guest expectations, and capitalize on new revenue streams, such as co-working spaces and long-term stay packages.?

As Damien Perrot , Global Chief Design, Technical Services & Innovation Officer for Premium, Midscale & Economy brands emphasizes in the report, "Hybridization is a consequence of how people live today. We move from creating spaces by function to enabling different atmospheres in one space; thereby giving guests the freedom to choose the best place to do what they want to do."

I accidentally canceled my booking via your app and the hotel refuse to reinstate it. I called the hotel immediately after the cancellation. The rooms are still available and the price is not change, I paid the full amount already. Why can not reinstate my booking? I booked this hotel to celebrate Christmas with my family. I know you have the right to do so cause it’s a non refund rate and it is written in your sales condition. But where is the humanity in your corporate culture? Is the refusal to accommodate my request an intentional way of profiting from guests' misoperation? Do I have to lose €350 because I pressed the wrong button? You took our money but don’t provide any products or services! That is rubber, rubber from your loyal members?? You advertise in the media about being hospitable, putting your members satisfaction first, and how joining your membership program is like being part of a warm family. Yet, in reality, you show no consideration for your members and seem only focused on profiting from them. In this situation, I have felt no kindness or humanity, only cold indifference and greed!
