As a person in a similar situation (in my 50s, never was in the C-suite BY MY OWN CHOICE), who often encounters people who think, "This person has been in their career so long, why aren't they a director or VP or whatever?" I have never wanted to be a C-suiter. I consider myself an artisan, not a corporate climber. I've nurtured my skills over the years to the point where I have legitimate, provable expertise. But because I don't have an executive title on my resume, I probably just "couldn't hack it" and that's why I'm not in an executive seat.
