From Early Decisions to Global Leadership: Career Reflections for the Next Generation
I was honoured to be asked recently to document my career story and offer insights for the next generation.
In reflecting on this journey, some key lessons on decision-making, personal growth and navigating the evolving landscape of the workplace became apparent - if this story can inspire just one person then its worth sharing! ?
Navigating Early Career Decisions
At around age 13-14 in the UK, you are expected to choose academic subjects aligned with your future career - a challenging decision with significant implications. Many young people have no idea at this age what they want to pursue.
As someone who loves working with people, my career set off with an eye toward success in the Hospitality Industry. Knowing this would require various skills and potential international exposure, learnings were focussed on business and language - subjects that could be easily transferable if a change in direction was required.
Further Studies: Exploring All Options
I was fortunate to attend university before high tuition fees were implemented, but the most valuable part of the experience, by far, was a year’s placement in industry. This included exposure to Sales, Marketing, HR, Finance, Payroll and People Management, giving early insight into which areas would be most enjoyable.
Today, with the availability of on-the-job training, sponsored qualifications and formal apprenticeship programs, these are routes anyone should give serious consideration to - especially if they are unsure of the direction they want. It’s a great way to explore different fields whilst earning and without committing to the long term debt of a full-time degree program.
Realizing Career Focus
At the end of the placement, I realized my passion lay in working with both people and numbers (and not in shift work!).? The search for a full-time role began. Temporary work in Recruitment, Banking and Insurance provided a valuable glimpse into the corporate world and how different business sizes and work practices could be. It’s a path I’d highlight to anyone starting out as it helps identify the types of companies and roles that best suit you.
The Value of Mentorship
For me there was a tough decision early on: two full-time job offers, one in Pensions and the other in Accounting ("Nothing is certain except death and taxes" as said Benjamin Franklin). Both were appealing, but my knowledge of either was limited.
Back then, the Financial Services industry was not heavily marketed by educational institutions, though it has since become a more prominent career path. This industry offers plenty of opportunities for learning (and earning), and has both customer-facing and back-office positions.
Understanding the tasks involved in a role and the potential for growth is crucial - don’t hesitate to seek advice. In today's world, LinkedIn offers access to millions of professionals who are willing to share insights. I was able to discuss my options with someone with knowledge of both areas, leading to a decision that set the stage for the future. For anyone starting out, reaching out to industry professionals with a simple message, attending meetups, or joining virtual events is a great way to learn more.?
Finding Your Way
I fell in love with Pensions, Insurance and the Human Resource Consulting area in this first role. How much of that was due to the outstanding training, lifelong friends (and husband!) that came with the job, I don’t know. But I realize that many young people don’t have such a great start. If you don’t find your ideal fit right away, don’t be discouraged - finding your career path takes time, just like finding your place in the world.
Investing in Yourself
In many industries, professional qualifications and continuous learning are essential for staying up to date with legislative changes and best practices. Formal qualifications can be quite intense - there are options for condensed or extended learning but it’s definitely much easier to undertake them before family responsibilities come along ;-)
Your development is in your hands. Consider dedicating some of your social media scrolling time to learning and building skills to boost your CV—whether through online courses or certifications.?

Building Skills Through Projects
Volunteering and participating in projects is a fantastic way to develop both hard and soft skills while deepening your understanding of your interests. My projects have ranged vastly - from designing and testing calculation logic, working with formal bodies, implementing legislative requirements, advising on corporate transactions to running training academies, promoting wellbeing, helping with CV writing and organizing and speaking at events. If projects are not readily available whilst working, consider offering your skills to community organizations or joining a professional group in your industry.
To Niche or Not: The Importance of Flexibility
Becoming an expert in one area can be appealing, but with rapid changes in technology and regulations, it can also be risky. If you get bored easily, specializing too narrowly might limit your enjoyment and future career opportunities. Always seek to learn more and diversify your skills - you might discover new passions along the way!
Choosing the Right Work Environment
Working on-site can offer social interaction, while remote work is a game-changer for those with caregiving responsibilities. There are also major differences between large corporates, small family-owned businesses and small-to-medium enterprises. Things can change suddenly with mergers, acquisitions or carve outs. Don’t be afraid to try different environments to find what suits you and always be prepared to 'roll with the punches' and view new chapters as opportunities.
My last two roles have been in start-ups - this type of environment offers a unique experience that, in my opinion, is the best way to gain exposure to multiple streams and learn on the job. But be prepared: a start-up ride can be the most exhilarating and challenging rollercoaster you’ll ever take!
Going International: Expanding Horizons
Switching from UK-specific to Global benefits felt like discovering a secret playground. Understanding the breadth of different requirements and interacting with people worldwide quickly became a calling. Expanding knowledge on global employment feels like opening a box of surprises every day!
There’s also the added bonus of travel when working in a global capacity. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is glamorous? - while a day or so may be able to be added for sightseeing, international work often comes with travel disruptions and the grim reality of seeing little more than the view out of the airplane window or the airport itself!
Knowing When to Stay or Go
You won’t love every role or every day - this is normal. Locating the right fit can take time. Stagnation or being trapped in a toxic environment can feel suffocating and impact your well-being. No brand name, job title, or paycheck is worth your health. Keep your options open and maintain a strong network.
However, if you find a role that challenges you and a manager who supports your growth, hold onto these with care and respect - these will help you thrive!
Key Lessons
The Takeaway
Reflecting on the last 20 or so years has been a wonderful opportunity. I’m grateful for every twist and turn, proud of the paths carved, the hurdles overcome and the impact (hopefully) made.
I encourage everyone - especially future generations - to embrace change, seek diverse experiences, think of every week as an adventure and remember that your career is a journey, not a destination.
There’s a big, wide world out there and in this remote era, there should be no limits to where you can work from.
Always happy to connect and share experiences, especially when it comes to global pensions and benefits!
