Embracing Equity on International Women's Day

Embracing Equity on International Women's Day

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. This year's theme, #EmbraceEquity , calls for a more equitable and inclusive society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive regardless of their gender, race, or background. As we reflect on this theme, we have the privilege to hear from a few women at Sphere Fluidics on what embracing equity means to them.

Ru Wang , PhD - Engineer (R&D Physics & Engineering)

" My name is Ru, I am an engineer at Sphere Fluidics. I am from a Chinese background, I grew up in France and did my post-graduate studies in the UK. In my spare time, I volunteer and fundraise for UK Chinese Women Connect association.

For me, embracing equity is about educating oneself about the different forms of inequalities that exist in our society, to acknowledge them and to advocate for change. For instance, there is a recurrent topic that comes up within our charity which is the glass ceiling, an unacknowledged barrier to advancement in a profession especially affecting women and member of minority groups. Our charity gets people to acknowledge the existence of these barriers and to find solutions to address this glass ceiling. We organize public speaking sessions, employment skills workshops and mentoring programs to help the members to improve their skills, to be more confident and raise their voice within their workspace. We organize cultural events to promote cultural exchange to empower individual to be part of the community. We can all start embracing equity by listening to what others have to say and staying open to learning and growth! "

Ru's personal journey is a testament to the importance of embracing equity.?

Claire Cox , PhD - Global Marketing Director

" Today is International Women's Day and it has prompted me to reflect on the issue of sexism in our society. Unfortunately, despite the progress made in British society over the past decade, instances of discrimination against women still persist. I have personally experienced this in various situations such as when purchasing a new TV and a new car, where the salesperson directed their attention and conversation towards my partner, even though I was the one making the purchase. More recently, when I received my car back after it was repaired, I discovered new damage to the paintwork. The person who returned the car suggested that I have my partner come out and check the car, questioning my memory and that my partner would remember better. When I explained that I have no partner and that it is unacceptable to suggest that my memory is faulty, he appeared surprised. These may seem like small incidents, but they are indicative of the inherent discrimination against women in our society. As we move forward, I hope that we can become a more inclusive and equitable world, and create a better future for the next generation, including my daughter Isobel. "

Claire's experiences highlight the need to embrace equity, particularly in everyday situations such as purchasing items or getting one's car repaired. Embracing equity requires us all to challenge gender bias and inequality in all aspects of society to create a better future for all.

Happy International Women's Day from all of us here at Sphere Fluidics. We look forward to listening to your stories and celebrating the principles of #EmbracingEquity together!
