Embracing Engagement without PowerPoint Slides

I recently had the opportunity to watch the recording of a workshop led by metacognitive coach, ?????? ????????????. This workshop was part of ????????'?? #???????? ?????? ?????????? (????) ???????????? ??????????????. GG is a leadership development program initiated by ???????????? ????????????, Head of HR Development at KUKA Group, with the aim of future-proofing leadership.

Let me tell you, the experience was unlike anything I have seen in recent years.

The room setup itself was different from the typical training environment. It was set up for a #???????????? session. Small tables were strategically positioned at the center, surrounded by chairs against a visually pleasing backdrop. This intentional arrangement created an atmosphere conducive to collaboration and active engagement.?

What caught my attention immediately were the carefully arranged objects on the tables. They added an intriguing element to the experience and sparked my curiosity.

Right from the start, the room was abuzz with activity. Despite being busy testing the audio and camera system, the coach engaged in conversations with participants as they arrived. This instantly put the participants at ease.

Though I was only watching the recording, I sensed an immediate connection with what was going on in the room. My instinct told me the session would be different from what I am used to.

The two and half hour #????????-?????????? session, which concluded with a simple lunch, proved to be an authentic and #???????????????????????????? experience.?

From start to finish, the session was packed with ???????????????? ?????????????? and valuable ???????????????? on the application of the content of the GG program. Roz did not use slides, yet she managed to keep the participants captivated and engaged throughout the session. There was never a dull moment.?

Intrigued by her ability to captivate the audience, I decided to take a closer look at the techniques she used to deliver the content.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Roz's coaching style was her adept use of #?????????????????? ?????????? ??????????????. With her compelling narratives, Roz Hussin ignited strong emotions and fostered deep connections in the participants. This made the learning experience highly relatable, genuinely inspiring, and truly memorable.

Another standout aspect was the skillful use of the #???????????????? ???????? in the session. Roz actively invited audience responses, insights, and perspectives. Thus, turning the session into a collaborative journey of growth and development, where everyone felt valued and heard.

What impressed me the most was Roz's deliberate design of #???????????????????? that engaged the five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Unlike typical PowerPoint-supported training, which mainly addresses sight and sound she went beyond that.?

One activity that impressed me was the use of the simple round-robin activity. Through multiple rounds of hands-on experiential engagement with objects on the table, participants heightened their awareness of each sense. This was followed by personal reflection and meaningful exploration adding a new dimension to the training.

She not only focused on the usual senses but also understood the significance of our #???????????????? as our "sixth sense". Throughout the session, she skillfully connected with the participants' emotions. She also highlighted the role of #????????????, the fourth dimension in time, in shaping our perception and overall experience of the world.?

The primary objective was to raise the awareness that as individuals, we possess a wide range of tools and skills, specifically our senses, which can be utilized to enhance work effectiveness and increase productivity

In my opinion, the magic sauce that contributed to the effectiveness of the session was the inclusion of these unconventional elements. By addressing emotions and memory, the experience was more profound and impactful.

This training experience has taught me that it does not always take visual aids like PowerPoint slides to captivate participants. Through strategic planning and the effective use of optics, training content can be delivered with maximum effectiveness, ensuring participant engagement.

Now I'm curious. Have you ever experienced a training session that used innovative content delivery methods? I encourage you to share your experiences and insights in the comments below. Let's inspire each other with impactful stories!

Susan Verghese, I completely agree! I still remember back in the days, when trainee teachers would bring learning aids or props to class, it made the learning experience so much more enjoyable, engaging and personalised. Those props added a touch of creativity and excitement to the lessons, capturing our attention and helping us stay focused throughout the lesson. It was incredible how those simple visual aids or hands-on materials added more ‘flavour’ to the lesson and made it easier to understand and remember. Something about having interactive activities in class made us feel actively involved in our own learning journey, fostering a sense of curiosity and participation. I truly miss those times when learning was not only educational but also a lot of fun!

Susan Verghese Thank you for your insights and feedback. Your analytical review of the session, is in itself, a valuable feedback loop. Glad you found the Vicarious Learning to be useful for you. I look forward to reiterating this workshop in different contexts, including Malaysia. Hopefully I’ll have the pleasure of inviting you to be a part of that. ?? PS. Shout out to Stefan Schmid who made this workshop possible, and to the #KUKA #Augsburg participants who were fully engaged and invested in the workshop. Also shout out to Valary Oleinik who inspired and motivated me to push the limits of gamification design.

Management System doctor ? I help manufacturers improve frontline operations to drive profit growth. They love the improvements in productivity and throughput—but hate those unexpected equipment breakdowns.

Wow, sounds like you had a great learning experience. Susan Verghese I wonder how you can use this style to teach Equipment Maintenance. My people would want to learn the steps, so I have to make it memorable and experiential for them.
