Embracing the Energy Transition

Embracing the Energy Transition

London International Shipping Week 2025 (LISW25) today welcomes NatPower Marine as its Energy Transition Sector Partner. The company invests in port electrification for shore power, cold ironing, and propulsion to accelerate the maritime sector’s transition to net-zero emissions while enhancing operational efficiency and reliability.

A dedicated division of the NatPower Group, NatPower Marine is one of the UK’s leading energy transition developers, with a £10 billion investment programme over the next decade to build the UK’s largest fleet of energy storage plants. This initiative will enable the shutdown of costly and polluting gas plants, which are currently paid to remain on standby, and will save £2.5 billion annually by using energy that is otherwise wasted from curtailed wind farms. ?

NatPower Marine is driving a transformative global campaign to accelerate the adoption of clean fuels in the maritime sector. Its focus is on enabling ships to access clean electric power to plug in while at port or anchor through the electrification of port operations, and for the first time supporting near-shore navigation within 200-nautical-mile low-emission zones. For offshore operations, it utilises hydrogen as a clean fuel solution. This initiative aligns with the UK’s commitment to green maritime practices and contributes to the national economic and environmental objectives. ?

Philip Lawson, Head of Marine Solutions at NatPower said: "NatPower Marine is pleased to be partnering with London International Shipping Week as the Energy Transition Sector Partner. The maritime industry is at a pivotal moment, with regulations like the EU’s Fit for 55 plan and FuelEU Maritime regulation mandating shore power connectivity by 1 January ?2030 in most world areas.

Yet, the industry faces a chicken and egg dilemma – shipping lines need charging infrastructure to electrify their fleets, while ports struggle to secure investment without having stranded assets.

At NatPower Marine, we’re breaking this cycle by delivering a global network of 120 charging points, ensuring ports are ready while enabling ships to confidently plan routes and plug into clean energy.

But we can’t do this alone. Collaboration is key – we are working with industry leaders, port authorities, and policymakers to accelerate the energy transition. Together, we can solve the electrification challenge and power a cleaner, more sustainable future for shipping."

Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, Co-founder and organiser of LISW said: “NatPower Marine epitomises the changing focus that we have been witnessing over the past six editions of London International Shipping Week, where managing the energy transition is now at the forefront. We are delighted that the company has come on board as our Energy Transition Sector Partner.”
