Embracing the Discipline of Rest: My 4-Day Diving Holiday with My Son

In today's fast-paced and hyper-connected world, the value of rest and rejuvenation is often overlooked. As professionals, we are constantly driven by goals, deadlines, and the desire to succeed, which can leave little time for ourselves and our loved ones. However, I recently embarked on a 4-day diving holiday with my son, and it was during this time that I truly understood the profound importance of embracing the discipline of rest. In this article, I want to share my experiences and the valuable lessons I learned from this meaningful getaway.

Finding Balance:

As ambitious individuals, we tend to prioritise our work and professional growth above all else. We strive for success, tirelessly pushing ourselves to meet our targets. However, without intentional rest, we risk burning out, compromising our well-being, and damaging our relationships. Rest is not a sign of weakness; it is an essential component of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Disconnecting from the Digital World:

During our diving holiday, one of the most impactful aspects was disconnecting from the digital world. We live in an era dominated by screens and notifications, which constantly demand our attention. Taking a break from technology allowed me to fully immerse myself in the present moment, strengthening my bond with my son and creating memories that will last a lifetime. By unplugging, we can reclaim our time and focus on what truly matters.

Exploring New Horizons:

Diving into the underwater world was as always, a fantastic experience. The breathtaking beauty of coral reefs, the vibrant marine life, and the sense of weightlessness brought a sense of awe and wonder. Stepping outside our comfort zones and exploring new horizons can awaken our sense of adventure and reignite our passion for life. It reminds us that there is so much more to the world than the confines of our daily routines.

Building Stronger Connections:

In the midst of our busy lives, we often neglect the quality time spent with our loved ones. The diving holiday provided an opportunity to reconnect with my son on a deeper level. We shared laughter, overcame challenges together, and really spent time in the moment. Away from the distractions of work and the pressures of daily life, we formed forged wonderful memories that strengthened our relationship.

The Power of Reflection:

During moments of rest, we gain the space and clarity to reflect on our lives and careers. Stepping away from the daily grind allowed me to evaluate my goals, aspirations, and priorities. I realised that success is not solely defined by professional achievements, but also by the relationships we nurture and the moments we cherish. The discipline of rest enables us to realign our perspectives and find renewed purpose.

Embracing the Discipline of Rest:

The four days spent diving with my son were an investment in my well-being, both personally and professionally. It reminded me that rest is not an indulgence but a necessary discipline. By allowing ourselves to rest, we recharge our minds, enhance our productivity, and cultivate a sense of fulfilment in all areas of life.

Take time for yourself and your family! Have a wonderful week ahead!

So, I didn’t promise you too much? That’s what I expected... ;) To motivate you even a little bit more to keep doing it and achieve my advanced ScubaDiving level one day, here a little spoiler which aspect you might will add to your reflection list in the future: Focus. With more experience you don’t think about your buoyancy anymore, you feel super safe down there and you have seen most fish already, which allows you to spot the little things in total calmness. Now it’s still excitement for you, which is great, but when you get on a higher level it becomes pure magic when just you (and maybe your dive buddy) observe closely a nudibranch for some time. But please, make sure to check your air from time to time. I often ascend with 0 bar. But not only because I’m sure I know the way up - as a German I can also be very stingy. I pay for the whole bottle, so I want to get everything out of it (cost-efficiency and maximal experience). But I don’t recommend that. I’m so happy that the two of you had such a great time and thanks for sharing, Paul - you always inspire me to do the things which I wanted to do anyways. A post on LinkedIn how my diving experience impacts my ways of working as an Agilist. Stay tuned ;)
