Embracing Design Thinking for Powerful Public Speaking

Hello, and welcome to the very first issue of my newsletter! I'm Sundararaman Chintamani, a Toastmaster for 16 years, a passionate public speaker for over a decade, and now a professional speaker and design thinking consultant. Combining these experiences, I’m excited to launch this newsletter titled "Design Thinking for Public/Professional Speaking." In this issue, let's dive deep into why design thinking is essential for public speaking.

What is Design Thinking in Public Speaking?

In today’s world, communication is the key to connecting with others, and public speaking is a powerful way to share ideas and inspire action. But to truly connect with your audience, it takes more than just delivering a good speech. This is where design thinking comes in.

Design thinking is an approach to solving problems by deeply understanding the people you're serving. Originally used in product design, it’s now used in many fields because it focuses on empathy and human needs. Think of it like this: instead of creating something based on what you think is best, you learn about your audience's needs, challenges and desires and create with that in mind.

Now, let’s apply that idea to public speaking. Here, your audience is your “user.” Your goal isn’t just to speak at them but to connect with them in a way that resonates with their lives. Using design thinking, you’ll shift from a one-way delivery of information to a dialogue, where your words, tone and body language create a meaningful exchange with your audience.

?? In public speaking, empathy is your superpower. When you understand your audience’s perspective, your message becomes more impactful and your speech transforms into a journey you take together.

Why Use Design Thinking in Public Speaking?

So, why is design thinking so important for speakers? Here’s why it’s a game-changer:

  1. Audience-Centric Focus: Traditional public speaking often centers on the speaker. With design thinking, the focus shifts to the audience. Every group of listeners is different, with its own needs, opinions and emotions. This approach helps you create a message that speaks directly to your audience’s experiences.
  2. Empathy-Driven: When you take time to understand your audience’s challenges, dreams and motivations, your message will feel more relevant and engaging. Empathy helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level.
  3. Building Engagement: Public speaking isn’t just about talking—it's about engaging. Design thinking helps you create interactive moments, relatable stories and shared experiences that keep your audience invested in your message.
  4. Continuous Improvement: One of the strengths of design thinking is that it’s a process of constant learning. After each speech, you gather feedback, refine your approach and improve your next talk. This cycle of feedback and adjustment helps you grow as a speaker.
  5. Holistic Experience: Effective public speaking isn’t just about what you say—it’s also about how you say it. Design thinking encourages you to consider all elements, including body language, voice and visuals, to create an overall experience that resonates with your audience.
  6. Transformative Communication: With design thinking, public speaking becomes more than just delivering words. It’s about making a real difference in how your audience thinks, feels, and acts. This approach helps you become a more adaptive, empathetic, and impactful speaker.

Final Thoughts

In "Design Thinking for Public Speaking," I’ll explore practical strategies that will help you take your public speaking to the next level. By using these principles, you can build stronger connections with your audience and leave a lasting impact. This is just the beginning of our journey into how design thinking can transform public speaking into a powerful, shared experience.
