Learn + celebrate
?Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month is observed in the United States September 15–October 15 to honor, celebrate and appreciate Hispanic and Latinx communities and how their vibrant cultures enrich the U.S. in all aspects of life.
“Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month is the perfect time to educate our neighbors about our identity and celebrate our culture,” said Jorge Ramos Pantoja, Internal Communications Specialist at Hyland. “Cherish those things that make our communities vibrant and our contributions so important.”
It’s important to understand our differences and what they mean for the way we work and live. An easy starting point for understanding Latinx and Hispanic culture is knowing the difference between the two:
Celebrating the rich diversity of Hispanic and Latin culture
Being able to freely share our culture and background with the people around us is an important step in creating an inclusive workplace. A few employees shared with us the meaningful ways their heritage helps add value to our organization and how embracing our cultural diversity helps us all work better together.
Embrace diversity to achieve success
“Growing up in Puerto Rico, I got to experience first-hand its vibrant communities, laid back lifestyle, and resilience during its darkest times. Since living in the United States, I try to put in practice those values that shaped me everywhere I go – acting with kindness, living boldly and being proud of who I am,” said Ramos Pantoja.?

“It is important for people to understand that while Latinxs and Hispanics are all under the same umbrella, we are all unique,” said Ramos Pantoja. “Every Latin American country has its own words, customs, traditions and beliefs. Working in a global environment, I've experienced that collaborating with diverse groups of people very often leads to greater opportunities of success on shared goals. I encourage Latinxs and all minorities to stand proud and speak up. That's the first step towards a more inclusive workforce and healthier communities.”?
Encourage empathy
Understanding cultures outside of your own can be a differentiator when it comes to successful collaboration.?
“I am very proud to be an ambassador of my culture in my daily work. I am very lucky to be part of the localization team and have a job that enables me to enjoy explaining the differences of my Latin culture to the other cultures we encounter as a global company,” said Sandra Moreno, Localization Analyst at Hyland.
“I encourage everyone to have a better understanding of all cultures. Choosing the appropriate attitude can be a key factor when you must respond to difficult situations. When you can show openness and awareness about diversity across cultures, you can recognize common patterns. Keep questioning yourself about your perceptions and assumptions to make sure you are not culturally biased. Remember that how you perceive another culture might be just the ‘tip of the iceberg.’”
A warm culture
“For me, Latinx heritage is to being able to share everything that I grew up with in my Latin American culture. Things like the joy, the flavor, the music, the dance, the food,” said Carlos Pinzon, Solution Engineer at Hyland. “I always try to invite people to visit Latin American countries to feel the warmth of the culture.”
