Embracing Constraints: The Secret to Unleashing Creativity and Resourcefulness
Eric Saint-Andre
Guiding Leaders, Teams, and Organisations to Be Future-Ready with Customised Training, Facilitation, and Coaching
In my decade-long experience coaching startups and innovation teams, I've observed a paradox: an abundance of resources often leads to less creativity, not more. The most successful startups and teams are those that navigate their journey within tight constraints. This scarcity forces them to be resourceful, to devise solutions with whatever little they have at their disposal.
The Counter-Productive Nature of Excess Resources
The mature startup ecosystem today lavishes new founders with resources - funding, acceleration programs, coaching, and more. While essential, this abundance might inadvertently dampen the very resourcefulness that fuels innovation. Similarly, in large organisations, teams equipped with ample resources may lack the drive to explore audacious, resilient solutions.
A Strategy for Cultivating Resourcefulness
My advice to organisations and startups alike is simple yet challenging: impose resource restrictions. Like funding rounds in the startup world, unlock further resources only upon achieving strong validation of progress. This staged approach, particularly in initial phases, compels teams to think creatively, fostering better outcomes and nurturing a culture of innovation and skill development.
Consider This:
Incorporating constraint-based challenges can radically transform how we approach problem-solving. By deliberately limiting resources (time, money, materials), we ignite our creative spark, encouraging innovative solutions that would remain undiscovered in a context of abundance.

The Power of Resourcefulness
Resourcefulness isn't just about managing with less; it's about a mindset of seeing beyond limitations, where every constraint becomes a canvas for creativity. It's about adaptability, innovative problem-solving, and an optimistic outlook that reframes setbacks as opportunities.
Your Challenge:
Reflect on a recent instance where you felt hindered by resource constraints. How could a shift towards a resourceful mindset have changed the outcome? This week, pick an area in your life or work and apply a constraint-based challenge. Observe how this shift impacts your problem-solving approach and fosters a more creative, resilient mindset.
Healthcare's Call for Resourcefulness
Recently, I had the privilege to lead a session for a group of healthcare leaders at SMU Executive Development. In an industry burdened by escalating demands and constrained resources, these leaders are tasked with the monumental challenge of delivering more value with fewer resources. Equipping them with the mindset and methods to be resourceful becomes not just beneficial but essential.
In healthcare, where the stakes are life and human well-being, the ability to solve bigger problems and accelerate time to value can have profound implications. This session highlighted the critical need for resourcefulness in healthcare - to innovate within the bounds of regulatory and resource constraints, to find novel solutions for patient care, and to navigate the complexities of health management with agility and foresight.
Through embracing constraints, these leaders are paving the way for more resilient, innovative, and efficient healthcare delivery systems, proving that within every limitation lies a seed of unparalleled opportunity.
