Embracing Coexistence: Pilgrimage in Japan

Hello Soul Path community,

I recently returned from an incredible journey through Japan's ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. Though the trail isn’t known for its technical difficulty, it’s famously called the “trail where your faith is tested.” And, true to its reputation, the journey brought me face-to-face with unexpected challenges that tested my endurance, patience, and perspective. But as with all tests, there were profound lessons, too.

One of the most resonant teachings from this pilgrimage was the simple yet powerful philosophy of the Three Pillars of Life: to Live, to Serve, and to Coexist. Today, I want to share some reflections on the last of these pillars—Coexistence—and how it’s woven into the flow of life in ways we might not often realize.

Coexistence and the Art of Saying "Yes, And..."

In improv theater, there’s a golden rule that keeps the scenes flowing: you never say "no." Instead, you say, “Yes, and...”The practice of accepting and building on each new element helps the story grow, bringing surprises, laughter, and unexpected revelations. What if we embraced this same spirit of “yes, and” in our lives, inviting flow by saying "yes" to what comes our way and adapting as we go?

During my pilgrimage, I began to see that coexistence is more than simply existing alongside others or being tolerant. It’s about actively engaging with life—embracing the unknowns, the second guesses, the slight discomforts, and being open to the surprises that follow.

Saying “Yes” to Life

Reflecting on this idea of coexistence through “yes, and,” I wondered: how many opportunities do we miss by hesitating, overthinking, or saying “no” because something feels uncomfortable or uncertain? What if, instead, we chose to say “yes” more often?

  • That job you’re on the fence about? Yes, and see where it leads.
  • That first date you were considering ghosting? Yes, and discover what unfolds.
  • That new class, hobby, or idea that feels a bit out of reach? Yes, and find out what hidden parts of yourself come alive.

This isn’t to say we should say “yes” to everything without discernment. It’s about finding a willingness to lean into life rather than shrink away from it. By saying “yes” to coexistence—to flowing with the current instead of resisting it—we allow life to reveal its hidden treasures, each one a gem for our inner “treasure box” of experiences and lessons.

Coexisting with Life’s Flow

The essence of coexistence is a dance of faith, curiosity, and acceptance. It’s an invitation to be present, to respond, to grow alongside the world as it changes, and to allow ourselves to evolve. When we practice “yes, and,” we create space for new connections, insights, and growth, enriching our journey and expanding our capacity to live fully.

As you go through the coming days, I invite you to consider where in your life you might practice saying “yes.” Where can you coexist with what is, and allow new experiences to unfold? What gems of learning might be waiting for you if you simply leaned in?

Thank you for being here, for sharing in this journey, and for exploring the paths that connect us all. Until next time, remember that coexistence is not just about living together; it’s about growing, learning, and flowing with life in ways that nourish us all.

Soulfully yours,
