Embracing Change: Redefining Identity Beyond Job Titles

In February 2024, I faced a significant life shift: I was laid off from Tesla. Initially, the experience left me feeling embarrassed and uncertain, especially when asked, “What do you do?” For a while, my response was tangled in my job title, as if it were the very essence of my identity.

It took me some time to accept that I hadn’t left on my terms. I felt a sense of loss—not just of a job, but of the identity I had built around it. The shame of being laid off clouded my perspective and made it hard to see beyond that title.

But as I navigated this unexpected transition, I discovered something profound: I am not defined by a title; I am a community advocate, a daughter, granddaughter, aunt, sister, podcaster, and businesswoman at my core.

Here are a few insights I've gathered along the way that might help others in similar situations:

1. Redefine Your Identity

Your job title is just one part of your story. Reflect on your passions, values, and the impact you want to make. What drives you? For me, community advocacy has always been a central theme in my life. By focusing on what truly matters, I found clarity and purpose beyond my previous role.

2. Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s normal to feel embarrassed or lost after a layoff. Give yourself permission to process those emotions. Accepting how you feel is the first step toward moving forward. I realized that it was okay to grieve the loss of my job and the way it ended.

3. Rejection is a Redirection

Rejection is merely a redirection; a course correction to your true purpose. While it’s easy to view a layoff as a setback, I’ve come to see it as an opportunity to pivot toward new paths. Embrace the change as a chance to explore uncharted territory and discover new passions.

4. Embrace the Unknown

Change brings uncertainty, which can be uncomfortable. Instead of fearing it, lean into it. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embracing the unknown has allowed me to explore new interests, build relationships, and discover capabilities I never knew I had.

5. Network Authentically

When you meet someone new, share your journey—not just your title. Connect on a human level. Engage in conversations about shared interests, ideas, and goals. Building relationships that extend beyond professional labels can lead to unexpected collaborations and friendships.

6. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Every setback is a setup for a comeback. View challenges as learning experiences. Take online courses, attend workshops, or read books that spark your interest. Each step you take enhances your skills and prepares you for the next chapter.

7. Have Fun Along the Way

Don’t forget to enjoy the journey! Embracing change can be exhilarating. Explore new hobbies, meet new people, or volunteer. Find joy in the process and celebrate small wins. After all, life is too short to take everything so seriously.

As I move forward from my time at Tesla, I carry these lessons with me. My identity is no longer tied to a job title but is rooted in my passions.

Let’s remember: titles may change, but our core values and passions remain.
