Embracing Change: My Journey from Oslo to London and Back Again

Life is a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, and my story is no exception. Born in the picturesque city of Oslo, Norway, to Tamil parents, my life took a remarkable path that led me to England's vibrant capital, London, at the age of 8. But as fate would have it, in 2020, I made a bold decision to return to my roots, embarking on a new adventure by moving back to Norway. In this article, I will share my journey, the lessons I learned along the way, and how taking risks can lead to extraordinary opportunities.

A Cultural Odyssey: From Oslo to London

Growing up in Oslo with Tamil roots allowed me to experience the richness of two distinct cultures. I was fortunate to celebrate Norwegian traditions while also cherishing the customs and values passed down from my parents.

However, at the tender age of 8, my life took an unexpected turn as we packed our bags and headed to London.

Leaving behind the familiar streets of Oslo was daunting, but it was also the beginning of an incredible journey.

Learning the Art of Adaptation

Moving to London was like entering a new world. The fast-paced lifestyle, diverse communities, and the sheer magnitude of the city were overwhelming, especially for a young child. I quickly realised that in order to thrive in this dynamic environment, I needed to adapt. Learning the art of adaptation became my secret weapon in this new chapter of my life.

One of the most significant lessons I gained from my time in London was the importance of embracing different cultures and perspectives. The city's multiculturalism encouraged me to appreciate the beauty of diversity and to be open to new experiences. From savouring exotic dishes to celebrating various festivals, I was immersed in a world of cultural richness that expanded my horizons.

Returning to Norway: A Homecoming in 2020

In 2020, amidst the global turmoil, I made the bold decision to return to Norway. It was a choice filled with uncertainty, as I left behind the life I had built in London. This move was driven by a desire to reconnect with my roots, embrace the strong work-life balance Norway is known for, and contribute to the country I had always considered home.

I realised that this decision was a testament to my willingness to embrace change once again. Returning to my homeland, I brought with me the invaluable experiences of London, which had moulded me into a more adaptable, open-minded, and culturally aware individual.

Armed with just over 5000 kr and the reassuring words of a childhood friend who promised that "everything will be okay," I embarked on a journey that, in hindsight, might have seemed naive.

Setbacks as Stepping Stones

Like any journey, mine had its share of setbacks. My initial months in Norway were far from smooth sailing. I found myself without a place to live and without a job. The challenges were daunting, and doubt crept in. Learning a new language, dealing with homesickness, and facing other challenges were part of the package.

However, the resilience I had acquired from my time working in recruitment in London served as my anchor. I refused to give up. I knew that setbacks were an inevitable part of life, and overcoming them would only make me stronger. I hustled, networked, and stayed committed to my goal.

I chose to view these setbacks as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. They were opportunities for growth and development, teaching me resilience and the power of determination.

Over time, I not only overcame these obstacles but also managed to get back on track.

I landed a job that opened the doors to a career in the tech industry, and I finally found a place to call home in Norway. My network of friends grew, and I soon realised that I was in an even better place than I had been in London initially.

A Passion for Football and Arsenal

Throughout my journey, one thing that has remained constant is my love for football.

My love for football was nurtured in England, where I became an avid Arsenal fan. Moving back to Norway, I was thrilled to find that the passion for football and the Premier League was shared by many, strengthening the sense of connection between these two nations. It's a source of camaraderie and a reminder that shared interests can bridge cultural gaps.

Learning Cultures and Languages

Throughout my journey, I've come to understand the power of learning languages and embracing diverse cultures. My multilingual background, coupled with my time in London, where diversity thrives, allowed me to become fluent in English, Tamil, Norwegian, and even German.

Speaking multiple languages opened doors to new friendships and professional opportunities. It allowed me to connect with people from various backgrounds on a deeper level, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.

The Supportive Network

My journey would not have been possible without the incredible people I met along the way. From my childhood friend who provided unwavering support to my bosses, colleagues, and friends in Norway, I was surrounded by individuals who believed in me and my potential. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to lend a helping hand made all the difference during challenging times.

The Take Away

My journey from Oslo to London and back to Norway has been a remarkable adventure filled with valuable lessons. It has taught me that taking risks, embracing change, and learning from setbacks are essential ingredients for personal growth and success. Whether you're considering a similar leap or facing challenges in your current path, remember that with resilience and determination, you can overcome obstacles and build a brighter future.

So, take that leap of faith, explore new horizons, and be open to the rich tapestry of experiences that life has to offer. Your journey might just be the next inspiring story that motivates others to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
