Embracing Change: How to Find a Fulfilling Job Outside of Accounting for CPAs

For CPAs who have dedicated years to the field of accounting but feel an undeniable void in their lives, this blog post is a beacon of hope.

If you find yourself yearning for a change, unsure of what that change should be, and seeking a more meaningful and fulfilling path, this article is here to empower and inspire you.

It emphasizes the importance of self-understanding and self-awareness as the foundation for finding a job outside of accounting that aligns with your true passions and desires.

We have all been there. When things are not going well, we end up seeking answers from others. We might end up endlessly scrolling job boards, just to find that there are no jobs that interest you.

We seek external validation for guidance. Others will give you varying opinions....

  • "Don't leave your job unless you have something else lined up."
  • "Stick it out until you are a manager then you will have more opportunities."
  • "Don't change careers. You spent so much time building it already."
  • "Don't give up, you are just having a hard time."
  • "Stop complaining. You have a job."
  • "If I were you, I'd find a role with less hours."
  • "Have you considered working for government?"

How can we possibly make a decision when everyone else has different opinions?

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

If you feel burnt out, misaligned, underappreciated, and exhausted by the repetitive nature of your day-to-day life as an accountant, it's essential to acknowledge and validate these emotions. Recognize that you deserve to feel satisfied and fulfilled in your career, and it's never too late to make a change.

You may have gotten used to, or even addicted to these feelings. You may feel comfortable where you are at right now, but are deep down yearning for a challenge, change, and shift in perspective and scenery.

Take notice of how you cope with these challenging feelings. Are you spending more time on social media? Binge or stress eating? Becoming avoidant? Using substances or alcohol?

We cannot hide away from these challenges. It's ok to feel bad about your situation.

2. Self-Understanding and Self-Awareness

Finding a fulfilling job outside of accounting begins with self-understanding. Take the time to explore your passions, interests, and values. Reflect on what brings you joy and fulfillment outside of the accounting world.

This process of self-awareness will help you uncover what has been missing from your life and guide you towards a new career path that aligns with your authentic self.

Consider this question:

If I didn't have to go to my job tomorrow and I had the opportunity to do what I love, what would I be doing for work?

Take away any of your limiting beliefs and doubts. Give yourself a moment to dream a little!

What would be possible if you went after what you want?

3. Seek Inspiration

Understand that you are not alone in your journey. Many CPAs have experienced similar feelings and successfully transitioned into new careers that bring them joy and fulfillment. Seek out stories of individuals who have made similar transitions and find inspiration in their journeys. Surround yourself with a support system of friends, mentors, and like-minded professionals who can validate your desire for change and provide guidance along the way.

4. Embrace New Opportunities: Finding a Fulfilling Job

Once you have gained a deeper understanding of yourself and your aspirations, it's time to embrace new opportunities. Be open to exploring industries and roles that align with your passions and values.

Research and network within these areas to gain insights and uncover potential job prospects.

Remember, your CPA designation is a valuable asset that can be applied to a wide range of careers, providing you with a strong foundation for success in new domains.

Have you considered looking outside of your region or city? There are many remote opportunities available these days!

Making a decision to change starts with deciding to let go of your past identity.

Take the opportunity to recreate yourself!

5. Take a Chance on Yourself

Leaving the familiar world of accounting can be daunting, but remember that change often requires taking a leap of faith. Believe in your abilities and the value you can bring to a different field. Trust that the skills and experiences you have gained as a CPA have equipped you with a unique perspective and a robust skill set that can be applied in numerous contexts.

6. Continuous Growth and Learning

Transitioning to a new career outside of accounting is a journey of continuous growth and learning. Be open to acquiring new knowledge and skills that are relevant to your desired field.

Seek out training, certifications, or educational programs that will enhance your expertise and increase your marketability.

Give yourself a budget. Don't stop investing into yourself.

University costs $30K on average in Canada and the CPA over $10K.

Yes you are already in $40K into your education.

What would happen if you give yourself a small budget, say $1K to invest into yourself.

What books would you pick up? What online courses are you interested in?

Have you considered investing into coaching?

Conclusion

To all CPAs yearning for a change and seeking a more fulfilling path outside of accounting, know that you are not alone. Embrace self-understanding, seek inspiration, and validate your desire for change. Take a chance on yourself, explore new opportunities, and be open to continuous growth and learning. Remember, the power to shape your future lies within you, and a meaningful and fulfilling career outside of accounting is within your reach.
