The Intrapreneur
Fostering Innovation from Within
At the heart of every thriving organisation lies the spirit of innovation, often driven by intrapreneurs. Unlike entrepreneurs who establish new ventures outside the corporate structure, intrapreneurs drive change within their organisations, leveraging resources, capabilities, and networks to drive growth and inject a startup mentality.
Intrapreneurship involves nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset within the confines of a larger organisation. Intrapreneurs identify opportunities, champion ideas, and drive projects that enhance competitiveness and align with strategic goals despite the challenges of corporate structures.
The Importance of Supporting Intrapreneurial Talent
The potential of intrapreneurship can only be realised in environments that support and nurture these internal entrepreneurs. Organisations often need to work on recognising intrapreneurial talent or stifling innovation with bureaucratic hurdles. This oversight can lead to a significant loss in internal innovation and may drive intrapreneurs to seek environments where their ideas and energy are valued.
Organisations go wrong when they:

Overcoming Resistance to Change
My career has been deeply rooted in the challenges and rewards of fostering innovation within well-established companies. Guided by Steve Jobs' insight that "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower," I have worked to drive change in traditionally structured environments.
However, this path has challenges, particularly when faced with resistance from management wary of deviating from the status quo. This resistance often arises from a fear of the unknown or a reluctance to risk failure, potentially reflecting poorly on business or department performance. These fears can result in hesitance to adopt new ideas, ultimately hindering organisational growth and adaptability. Remember Blockbuster? Their story is a poignant reminder of what happens when innovation is sidelined.
I adopted a principle to tackle this resistance: "Act like an engineer and think like an accountant." This approach meant relying on relevant data and established methodologies to tackle substantial challenges by validating the efficacy of innovative concepts. This data-driven strategy was vital to overcoming scepticism and highlighted the definitive benefits of my proposed changes, enabling me to dismantle the barriers to innovation within these organisations gradually. Until recently, that is.

Pivoting from Intrapreneur to Entrepreneur
The turning point in my career emerged when it became clear that my intrapreneurial nature was incompatible with the company culture. Faced with an environment more concerned with preserving personal bonuses and cultivating an inner circle of 'yes men,' I found my ambition for innovation and change stifled. This environment led me to realise that my drive for pioneering change could not thrive where innovative ideas were consistently undervalued, met with indifference, or dismissed with excuses like “the business is not mature enough,” or worse, ignored altogether (brushed off).

The Entrepreneur
Leading Innovation Beyond Boundaries
Just as the spirit of innovation fuels the growth of thriving organisations from within, entrepreneurship extends this creative force beyond the conventional boundaries of corporate structure. Entrepreneurs, much like intrapreneurs, are catalysts for change. However, their arena is the broader market, where they establish new ventures guided by a vision to meet unaddressed needs or to offer novel solutions.
Entrepreneurship is embracing innovation and channelling insights, experiences, and passions into ventures that reflect personal values and ambitions. Entrepreneurs navigate uncertain terrains, drawing upon creativity, resilience, and strategic insight to build and grow their businesses.

Drawing from Intrapreneurial Experiences
My transition from an intrapreneur to an entrepreneur was marked by the realisation that the constraints and resistance I faced within corporate environments were not barriers but stepping stones. The lessons learned in overcoming these challenges have been invaluable in my entrepreneurial journey and lifestyle:

What does intelligent data mean to focused leaders who know their stuff? This question has become central to my entrepreneurial strategy, reflecting on how informed decision-making based on intelligent data can drive a business forward. This insight, drawn from my intrapreneurial learnings, has reinforced the importance of collecting data and deriving actionable insights that can lead to informed, strategic decisions and innovations.

Charting New Territories
The decision to embrace entrepreneurship came from a profound belief in innovation's power to effect change within existing structures and shape new markets and communities. This journey from intrapreneur to entrepreneur was filled with challenges and unparalleled growth, learning, and impactful opportunities. It’s a testament that the true innovator builds a new path when ideas are met with indifference.
Now on this new journey, I'm precisely where I need to be—far from the constraints of conformity, thriving as an entrepreneur. I was meant for this, driven by innovation and the refusal to settle or be told I needed to be a ‘yes man’ and comply only with existing outdated policies. Taking a chance at change has led me to this moment of fulfilment and success.
